Classic Rock Bottom

I listen to "the fans" and I hear "the fans"!

Seems that most did not like the tour from last month and it looks like I made quite the wise decision in dropping out. Don't let that other one fool you....he knows nothing. He's not there for you, "the fans".

I am!

So, to wipe that bad taste out of your mouth some more, we continue this week with solo King's X, cause we all love 'em. If you don't, you just don't know that you do just yet.

So here we go.....this weeks pick is the 1998 release from Poundhound, featuring Doug (or Dug) Pinnick playing everything (except drums) as well as singing, cause that's what he does. The title of this collection is (are you sitting down?) "Massive Grooves From The Electric Church Of Psychofunkadelic Grungelism Rock Music" or simply "Massive Grooves...." for short.

And what do we have? Groove music, man! Just like the title says. And they are quite massive, again, just like the title says. Hell, I guess the title alone explains what you're in for.

So, if you love King's X, you'll love this. If you don't, well, you eventually will. You will conform and bow down to the entity known as King's X as well as anything the members of King's X are involved in.

Just go with the flow......

Massive Grooves.....

1. Rev

2. Jangle

3. Shake

4. Music

5. Love

6. Darker

7. Friends

8. Soul

9. Supersalad

10. Psycholove

11. Blindeye

12. Red

13. Hey

14. River

Availability: OOP for some reason, but can be found for less than $5.

Interesting title and beginning track for sure.

I get the down-tuned grungelism, the bass lines and crunching geetar let the listener know right away the gospel according to this electric church.  The vocals dont really fit, they are weaker than the songs deserve, if were going to be at church, then raise your voice and feel it, these seem weak to me...

I am having trouble hearing Massive Grooves as well.  I here the same bass line over and over...

Was there some thought behind an album with a very large title full of one-word titled tunes?  I am not connecting with this.

Conclusion:  I will not be worshipping at the altar of the Electric Church.

I'm actually surprised.

Or maybe not. Maybe you're just a heathen.

Maybe I should come back to it then, I had it on in the background while working on some difficult projects this morning...

heathen

I don't know, I don't really care for this.  Once again, I don't hate it, but to me, although I'm certainly not the biggest King's X fan around here, I like the proper band's work better than this solo album.  Sometimes Doug sounds like he's high.  Seriously.

I also think last week's post was a good bit better than this one, even though it was a bit poppier.

heathen!

not really...  I just didnt want to be alone in Electric Church purgatory

HEATHENS!

Liking this as I listen for the first time! I think Doug Pinnick is a very good vocalist. And Jon, you're saying he played the guitar, as well as the bass? Very talented dude!

I love the heavy, down-tuned, fuzzed up bass and guitar. Very similar to King's X.  I don't really think the bass lines are repetitive, but the sound is the same pretty much thoughout the record...and that's ok with me, because I like it. I've noticed that the songs all seem pretty short, but with 14 tracks, that's certainly not a problem for me.

My favorites so far are "Jangle", "Shake", "Love", "Soul", and "Psycholove". The last tune, "River", although very short, has excellent vocal work, as do a lot of these tunes, including "Love". "Hey" is not that great overall, but I like the main intro riff.

Really good guitar lead, I thought, on "Shake"...sounded very "Hendrixy" to me! The only songs that I did not like were "Friends" and "Supersalad", but I do like the lead in "Friends". I'll definitely listen to this again, just like the "Jughead" in last weeks post.

Good stuff Jon!

And there it is. The voice of reason: Gordon!

Knew I could count on you!!!!!

Listening to this again today! I think this is really, really good! Better than the Jughead, I think. Could not get into the Jerry Gaskill too much at all, but adding this to my "gotta get it" list!

The chorus to "Jangle" is just an awesome melody! "...something to believe in..." indeed!! For me, this track alone is worth the purchase price.
