Classic Rock Bottom

This came as kind of a request and it's also kind of a complement to the new Black Country Communion album which should be posted on NMC in the very near future.

This week is the 1982 self-titled release from Glenn Hughes (ex-Trapeze & Deep Purple) and Pat Thrall (ex-Pat Travers) titled, interestingly enough, Hughes/Thrall (or is it Hughes & Thrall? HughesThrall?).

I wouldn't really call this a hard rock album. Sure, there are some hard rock songs scattered about, but there's also slower, new-wavery, discoey sort of stuff too. And the geetar sometimes sounds like it's buried in the mix.

It also kind of sounds like an early 80's album, but also sounds like something that could have come out in the late 80's-early 90's (check out "Muscle And Blood" and tell me that doesn't sound like Blue Murder. Go ahead and tell me!). The only song I cam remember being played on the radio is "First Step Of Love", maybe some other songs got some airplay (and why wouldn't they?) but can't say for sure.

Even though it's sometimes buried, the geetar work is very good and the singing is, well, what you would expect from Mr. Hughes.

All in all not a bad album, but I think that the solo work from Glenn Hughes is much better than this. Is that a hint of upcoming stuff?

Stay tuned!

Hughes/Thrall

MSoTW: Still nothing on last week's song. Someone started and never followed up. Sigh. Really, a big, big sigh. SIGH. This week's is, well, a mystery?

MSOTW ...  This is the Climax Blues Band  ... HA!  Just havent had a chance to go back and finish last weeks, in a bit of a transition around here lately.  However, if there are any James LaBrie nuts on here, go back listen, just need to know the band he was fronting on that track.

PS:  This weeks Kylie pic is a great one!

Yeah, too bad she's a midget!!
even better cause I'm tall  ...

I think that picture is a keeper?

He has got a good voice, good old Hughes, but of course, he was a better singer then than now, because of his age. I loved his voice on Gary Moore's "Run For Cover"-album from '85 and Tony Iommi's solo-album (Yes it WAS!!) "Seventh Star" from '86. This is very much 80's music, but I like it, especially because of Hughes voice. "Look In Your Eye" is a nice 80's tune. Some of the synths are TOO much 80's ha ha especially the start of "Beg, Borrow And Steal". "Muscle And Blood" don't sound like Blue Murder!! Well, maybe a tiny bit, then. One of the weakest songs, though. The guitars sounds a bit like Steve Lukather, and that's a very good thing.

Overall I like this album, and I might had bought it back in '82. Why is it, that there's often another lead-singer, besides Hughes? The only time he'd got "over-matched" was in Deep Purple.

I too liked this one - enough to go through it twice.  It gets a little 80's keyboardy at times but I forgive them as they were at the mercy of 80's production styles and striving for Mtv airplay.  The music style does take you back into the thick of the 80's, at that time it would have played real nice.

I recall seeing the album cover as well.  Probably the worst thing about this is the cover.

Nice post sir!

I don't know, I had really high hopes for this, but I'm not totally taken by it.  The best song to me is easily Who Will You Run To.  It did get better toward the end of the album.  I'm gonna find some time to put on the headphones and listen to this again, maybe I'm just distracted right now.

Best picture in a while.

I don't know the Mystery Song.
