Classic Rock Bottom

NEW MUSIC CORNER #12 (Black Country Communion, YOSO, Anberlin)

New Music Corner #12 - By Scott
9.24.2010

Today I have what some may consider SuperGroups - 2 of them actually.  And a new release from a band I'm really digging.  Enjoy!

Black Country Communion, Self Titled, September 2010
1.  Black Country
2.  One Last Soul
3.  Beggarman
4.  The Revolution In Me
5.  Sista Jane

Anyone shocked that I posted this one?  I read on their offical web page that Glenn Hughes has been associated with over 80+ releases and sales over 100 million.  Thats impressive, and I never knew that. But theres more to this Super Group than Glenn, other members include, Jason Bonham, Derek Sherinian (of Dream Theater fame), and Joe Bonamassa.  Seemingly a "can't miss" band.  And after only a few listens, I'm on the bandwagon, but not because its what you would expect to hear, but because its just good rock and roll.  I would hope this band tries for a follow up and uses the time to gel together better, then we can expect the "SuperGroup" to make the appearnace we all expected this time.

  • Coverart: C-, its just ok, looks a bit thrown together
  • Recommendation:  Its a buy for those on this site.

YOSO, Elements, July 2010
6.  Walk Away
7.  To Seek The Truth
8.  Path To Your Heart
9.  Only One
10. Return To Yesterday

YOSO is a dorky band name if you ask me, but its a play on the band namnes TOTO and YES.  They are Supergroup #2 in this list and are a melodic/progressive rock band combining former members of Yes (Billy Sherwood—bass/vocals and Tony Kaye—keyboards) and Toto (Bobby Kimball—vocals).  It is very much a Toto influenced sound with bits of Yes detectable in places.  If you enjoyed Toto's last release titled "Falling In Between" you will like this, otherwise this will be a hit and miss listen for you.  There are several live tracks included as a bonus disc from the Toto and Yes catalogs that are interesting to listen to as well.

  • Coverart: C, at least it fits the name of the CD and it of good quality
  • Recommendation:  The style on the CD bounces from moments of Yes and is mostly Toto.  Sometimes they merge nicely sometimes, well... you'll hear.  I like this one, so I recommend it as a buy, but understand it will only be for hardcore TOTO and YES fans.

Anberlin, Dark Is The Way. Light Is The Place, September 2010
11. We Owe This To Ourselve
12. Impossible
13. Take Me (As You Found Me)
14. Art of War
15. Depraved

Anberlin is a current band known for producing some radio friendly hits.  This one is bit more layered and heavier but still contains some radio friendly tracks.  Ive really taken to this band.

  • Coverart: B-, I like its simplicity and the theme of falling represents the Dark against the Light back drop.  Different.
  • Recommendation: Your choice, I lean to buy because I really like their style, but it may be too light for some who prefer cookie monster vocals and pounding double bass drums.

You dog...I was so hoping that BCC would slip by you, but oh well. I'll have to listen later. I'm looking forward to Anberlin. I thought about getting this one. I remember a song by them called Unwinding Cable Car or something like that and it's very cool.
Well Rjhog...disregard my email. Scott did it again. Burned again. By Scott. I see a pattern.
I knew I'd better jump on that YOSO soon...
Thanks for posting BCC Scott! Thanks for saving me some money! Not that it's bad, but it doesn't seem like something I would listen to more than a couple times. YOSO was ok, nothing special and Anberlin didn't do anything for me.

With thise extra money I've saved, I can buy us some food and some new shoes for me!
3 strikes from Jon. 1 out in the inning..
The best songs from the BCC-album is "missing": "The great divide" and " "Down again". I think, it's a great classic-rock album, and I've listened to it three times now, and I'm not done yet.
I like the BCC disc. I have it on order so I look forward to hearing the complete disc.

The Yoso is just okay to me. The vocals definitely make me think of Toto, but I don't know Yes well enough to make the connection.

I like what I've heard of Anberlin. I'll have to sample this a bit more.

I agree with all of you cover art grades.
