Classic Rock Bottom

I have 2 albums for this week's New Music Corner.   The first is the new Journey album, Eclipse.  Everybody pretty much knows about this one.  Although there are a couple of dreadful ballads on the album, I think overall it's a strong effort.  The second album is by a Canadian trio, Cauldron.  The album is Burning Fortune.  It was released earlier this year and I decided to take a chance on it.  Smart move on my part, as I think it's a good album.  It's a metal album, but with some very decent melodic hooks.  Not the greatest vocals in the world, but they still work okay for me.  The singer reminds me of Ron Keel at times (yes, I know this makes most of you not want to hear this, but give it a try).

JOURNEY - THUMBS ........almost down

In the first track, the guitars sounded a bit like Iron Maiden, and in the second track the riff sounded like Deep Purple's "Perfect Stranger". I thought they would sound like Journey?? I'm not a fan of Neal Schon's playing. I don't know THAT much Journey, but I had 1 or 2 Bad English-cd's. "Human Feel" is probably the best track, even though it ended weird.

CAULDRON - THUMBS DOWN

Hmmm, the start sounds like it's gonna be some old school-metal. A weak voice from the singer. The guitars sounds okay, but I HATE the singer. The production sucks. It sounds like a NWOBHM-band, but a lot of them were stinking!! Next to this album, the Journey-album is a master-piece!!

Is it Paul Stanley as a ballerina on the cover??

Listening to this right now, but before I remark on the music, I just gotta say thanks to Niels for a great laugh!!

It really does look like Paul Stanley as a ballerina!! It do, It do!! (wheres the makeup?) Hillarious!!

To the music: keep in mind I listen to this site at work, so I cant really crank it like I wanna, but both listens seemed pretty good to me. Lots of guitar, like I like. Surprised nobody else likes the Cauldron...some pretty good shreddin' goin' on in those songs.

Thanks, Gordon. At last somebody agrees!!!

Journey--Thumbs Up

Like I said before, this album rocks.

Cauldron--Thumbs 3/4 down

Sounded like a NWOBHM band with crappy production. Did not like the secnd, third or fifth track because they sounded too much like hair metal. Geetar was cool though and didn't have an issue with the singer.

Journey ... Thumbs on an upward trend but would be firmer if Tantra was left off the final mix.

First listen wasnt that great, that song TANTRA was awful.  My wife (who loves journey) told me, with a sour look on her face, to turn that song off as it was horrible.  Second listen was much better, I'm hearing great riffs and catchy choruses.  However, that song TANTRA still sucked pretty bad.  Third, Fourth and Fifth listens ...  I get it!  And I love it, and that TANTRA song?  Well its the exact opposite of the rest of the album, in that I'm loving the album more and more but hating TANTRA much in the same way.

CAULDRON ... Thumbs Down

Wow, whoever mixed this album needs to be fired, the sound is awful.  And while I hear some cool riffage in spots (like the fuzz bass in the 4th track), the singer screws it all up anyway.

Just realized that I used the words "Firmer" and "Tantra" in the same review.   so sorry....
You said "sucked" also....NIELS!!!
Uh-oh, me too!!  That'll teach you to make a couple of wolfs, to look after the sheeps.
I totally agree with you on Tantra.  That song is awful, and I do mean awful.  But get this, Rolling stone said that the first 17 minutes of the disc are terrible, and Tantra finally comes along a saves it.  WTF are they listening to?
