NEW MUSIC CORNER #46 (Warren Hayes, The Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band)

This weeks New Music Corner takes a bit of a stylistic turn.  Were gonna sit back and get into some Blues, real geetar-kick-you-in-the-mouth kind of stuff.

No reason to piddle around any further.  Lets get down to business...

Over the last decade or so, Haynes has hit the improvisational-rock trifecta by being a member of the Dead, the Allman Brothers Band, and his main gig, Gov’t Mule. On his latest solo album, the first studio album since 1993’s Tales of Ordinary Madness, he takes another left turn and brings an old-school blues and R&B vibe into the modern era.

This is the album many Warren Haynes fans have been waiting for. Haynes strikes a balance between great songs, some guitar pyrotechnics, and creating a sound that is bigger than the sum of its parts. If the Mule is too heavy for you and the extended jams of the Allman Brothers isn’t your bag, Man in Motion gives you the best of both worlds while not skimping on soul or musical vibe.

How I Go, boasts as much balls as any blues/rock album in recent memory.  It is refreshing to see a young name that brings to mind a specific instrument and sound (yes, KWS is still young, and yes, his tone still smolders). Without abandoning any of the blues weaved into Shepherd’s fingers, the forceful KWSBand doesn’t just straddle the line between blues and rock; it crushes it and forges its own legitimately convincing blues/rock creature. And although the spotlight always finds a way to shine on Shepherd’s lead work, the rhythm section is far more than a mere wingman. The boogie-down masters, bassist Tommy Shannon and drummer Chris “Whipper” Layton (the legendary rhythm section of Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble), are heavier than ever as they stomp their way through the album. How I Go exemplifies their animated virtuosity that calls to mind John Paul Jones and John Bonham – controlled, explosive, and downright groovy.

Warren Haynes (Thumbs Sideways)

Certainly not bad.  Best song to me is Rivers Gonna Rise.  Outstanding guitar playing, but not purchase material for me.

Kenny Wayne Sheppard (Thumbs 3/4 Up)

I like this better.   I really like the last two tracks.  I'll have to listen to this again.  It's very much a "possible buy".

Nice post.

I felt the same with the Warren Hayes release when I first sampled it too...  Come back to it a few times and take abrak in between listens, I think you'll love it
GEEEEETAR!!!!!
Shepherd shreds!  The tone he gets out that old stratocaster is unbelievable.  Enjoy!

Warren Haynes--Thumb Sideways

Not that it was bad, but it just seemed bland. It all sounded the same to me. Not a purchase for me. And did I hear some whocka whocka geetar?

Kenny Wayne Shepherd--Thumbs Up

Like his style, like his sound. Nice picks on the songs but...don't think I'll buy even though I like it. Damn economy plus there's a bunch of stuff coming out in September and I gots to be choosy.

Nice post, so geetary!

WARREN HAYNES - THUMBS on the way DOWN (4.5/10)

Hmmmm, it reminds me of a Steve Windwood-album I bought in '88, and it's okay, but .....   !!! I agree with RJhog, that the best song is Rivers  Gonna Rise, but..... !!!

KENNY WAYNE SHEPPARD - THUMBS on the way UP (5.5/10)

This is better. "Never Lookin' Back" is not a bad track, but I'm not THE biggest blues-fan around, but as I said, this is better than Warren Haynes. This guy is not a bad singer. Guitar's sound a LITTLE bit like Billy Gibbons. The last track is okay too. Well, I didn't fall asleep

This week's NMC is probably a LITTLE bit TOO "american" for me.

I think that's twice now you've pulled the "too American" card.  You got a problem with Yanks?
Absolutely not, my friend. I can name a LOT of american things, I love, but.........some things like blues and especially country-music is imo "too american for me". Probably a lot of other things, but other than that

Cool! I was interested in your feedback for the exact reason you mentioned. This is too Amercan for you. Having been raised on this style (to some degree) I naturally love it. So that raises a second question which is ...

If this style is associated with America, what musical style would you consider to be distincly Denamark/Scandanavian? (excluding native language vocals as part of the answer, I'm most interested in the musical style)

DEATH METAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, not Death Metal, even though Mercyfull Fate are/were from Denmark.

Aaah, this is a tough question, because rock-music started in the US, and an english band made it a world wide phenomenon, so what is a danish style in music. Well, I hate to say it, but I would probably say the kind of music Aqua were doing. Aqua, anyone? Barbie Girl?? I mean crappy pop-muisc. I don't really think, Denmark has a muisc-style on it's own, other than Dansih Folk-music, for people dancing around in clogs. I think Sweden, has a style, and it's more like a pop/rock thing. Let me give you an example:

This is the second-most populare band in Denmark, ever:

Does this answer your question?

But if there were any members on CRB from England, and they were posting music by punk-bands from the late seventies, I would probably say: This is too english for me!!!!

All things being equal, I love my blues roots....
