Classic Rock Bottom

New Music Corner #58 - (Coldplay, Derek Sherinian)

Lulu?  Gone... Fleetwood Mac?  Over...  Time for something we can all sink our teeth into, well at least some of us anyway.  For me this a very interesting showcase, but I'm thinking this crowd will give it mixed reviews...

Lets go...

COLDPLAY - MYLO XYLOTO

October 2011

1. Paradise

2. Charlie Brown

3. Every Teardrop Is A Waterfall

4.  Major Minus

5. Dont Let It Break Your Heart

...remove the Parachutisms of "Us Against The World" and you have to go a long way through this album before there’s any sign of the doom, gloom or humility that defined their early years. But if it was lethargic songwriting that killed that third album, here’s your respite. All the excess that may previously have been in musical content has this time been stockpiled onto the post-production end of things, and while the intense saturation may have a whiff of glowstick-vomit to it at times, the songwriting never wavers. From the stadium-ready grandeur of "Charlie Brown" and "Don't Let It Break Your Heart" to the simple hit-building of "Paradise", Chris Martin and co. Have perhaps found the best songs and the best mode of expression since their initial rocket course to fame.

DEREK SHERINIAN - OCEANA

September 2011

6. Five Elements

7. Mercury 7

8. Mulholland

9. El Camino Diablo

10. Seven Sins

Oceana is keyboard wizard Derek Sherinian’s seventh solo record and as usual it’s chock full of intense rock and fusion goodness. Guitar virtuoso guests are all over this record, and it does not disappoint. Oceana grooves harder and displays improved songwriting compared to past releases. The tunes are stronger, more concise, and memorable.

The cast includes Simon Phillips on drums, and Tony Franklin and Jimmy Johnson on bass. The guitar guests include Joe Bonamassa, Steve Lukather, Doug Aldrich, Tony MacAlpine, and Steve Stevens. These guys kill all over this record, and the compositional twists and turns range from bluesy, to classic 70’s fusion.

Coldplay???!!!

And I thought I was all vomited out.

Hey...  You wanted the best and you ...  ah nevermind, I'm pretty sure I knew what your response to this one would be, but I think you'll enjoy the Sherinian release....

So I can just skip that other one and say it sucks? Actually, I did like the song that Niels posted in one of his video posts, maybe I'm losing it and am a closeted Coldplay freak.

Coldplay (Thumbs Down)

Hey, it's not that I hate Coldplay.  I like a few of their tunes.  But to me, this just isn't interesting.  I would have no problem with this as background music, but I have no desire to delve into it.

Derek Sherinian (Thumbs Sideways)

This is definitely more interesting than Coldplay.  I like the guitar work.  Unfortunately, I'm not a big fan of instrumental records.  They just  don't hold my attention.  I'm a vocals guy, probably because I'm such a great vocalist.

COLDPLAY - THUMBS SIDEWAYS but on the way down

They have made some good music, especially on "A Rush Of Blood To The Head" and "X&Y", but even though "Viva La Vida" was a very popular record, I never got in to it, and some of the crap-sound and thin melodies, they had on that record, they continue on THIS album, even worse. I don't hate it, but I think, just like with U2, it's time to stop (U2 should had stopped in 1995). It's too bad, because if the melodies had been stronger, and the production not as "poppy", as it is, I would really had like this band. And a duet with Rhianna.........enough said!!!

DEREK SHERINIAN - THUMBS SIDEWAYS but slightly on the way up

Some cool names, on this record!! Like RJ, I'm not a big fan of instrumentals. A track now and then is okay. The best one, I've heard in YEARS, is on....can you guess it?.......... that's right, TESTIMONY 2!! Back to this album: I like it, but please, give me a singer on at least SOME of the tracks. I would like to know, which guitarist plays on which track??? I would guess Steve Lukather on "Mulholland"?

Coldplay--Thumbs Down

Are these guys fixed or something? Did someone take them to a vet and have hm/her perform a little chop-chop on their nether regions? I actually like a song from this album, something that was posted before, but the rest of this is utter crap. This is something that is played in an elevator or in an abandoned parking garage. Good golly, this was a complete waste of my time. Basically this totally sucked. I forgive you for posting an album 90 years old on your last NMC post. Please, please, PLEASE never post anything as awful as this ever again.

This is bad...I exited podsnack after listening to the DS album and Coldplay is still friggin' playing. This is horrible.

Have you heard the new Outfield yet?

No and I hope nobody every posts it either.

You are, aren't you.

I have a month to contemplate my next NMC...  They are now on the short list
