Classic Rock Bottom

NEW MUSIC CORNER #78 ROYAL SOUTHERN BROTHERHOOD/JOE WALSH

I've got two for you this week.  I was hoping Europe's Bag Of Bones would be in by now, but no such luck.  If nobody posts it in the next 3 weeks, I'll post it next go 'round.  For now, you are stuck with one that I picked up (actually downloaded to save some money) because of a pretty good review in Classic Rock Magazine, and one that I've been looking forward to.

Royal Southern Brotherhood

S/T

1. New Horizon

2. Fired Up!

3. Left My Heart In Memphis

4. Moonlight Over The Mississippi

5. Ways About You

This is the one I picked up based on the review.  True to it's name, it does have a little southern flavor, though not in the traditional "southern rock" sense.  The guitar playing is nice, very nice.  I've only listened to it once, but it's well worth the 7 bucks I paid to download it.  It will be getting some more spins in the near future.

Joe Walsh

Analog Man

6. Wrecking Ball

7. Lucky That Way

8. Spanish Dancer

9. Band Played On

10. Funk 50

This is the one I've been anticipating for a couple of months.  And I must say, after just one listen, I'm pretty underwhelmed.  I expected more guitar work.  Don't get me wrong, it's not bad.  I guess I was just expecting more.  I do really like the track Lucky That Way.  That would have been a great Eagles song.  Judge for yourself.  Let me know what you think.

I've had the "new" EUROPE for nearly a month now. I'm not gonna post it, though. The Joe Walsh-album is released on monday here in europe, so it's nice to hear it already.

RSB - 3 out of 6

Yeah, like I said, I'm drifting away from ya'll  musically. Not from my new best friend Mike, though! This is NOT what I want to hear in this time and age. Maybe there was a time in the 80's, that I would have liked it better. The first song sounds very much like "Harlem Shuffle". I haven't read that review? What's on the cover of that magazine? Rush or slash? Second track makes me think of James Brown, I don't know why? And I do NOT like James Brown at ALL. Nice voice on track 3, though. Easily the best track up until now. People, that don't like rock-music, likes this kind of music. Fourth tack sounds like Santana, second best track so far. Last track is okay, but I don't think, I'm going to hear this "album" again. Okay, then: Now count, how many lines, I've written about an album that I don't really like in NMC

JOE WALSH - 3.5 out of 6

Good start! Great production by Lynne off course, only the artists he produces always sounds like Tom Petty, ELO or Traveling Vilbury's. Especially the 80's-drums and the acustic guitars!! This is probably one of those albums, that you'll listen to 3 times, and then never again. Not a purchase for me, so thanks for posting it. Track two is not very good imo.  What you like, I don't like and vice versa, huh? Not all of the time, off course. Never really liked The Eagles   Okay guitar on "Spanish Dancer", not a bad track at all. Love the intro to "Band Played On". Yeah, like this one as well. "Funk 50" is NOT very good imo.

I was waiting for your Eagles comment when I seen this post!  hahahaha...  I was afraid of the production sounding too much like every other Lynne produced album.  I'm reserving my purchase until listening, as I had originally intended to run out and purchase, but have been sick in bed the past couple of days...

Sorry to hear that you've been sick.  Hope you feel better soon.  I'm headed out shortly to see Rick Springfield in the enormous town of Evans, Georgia.

thx, much better today!

You just wait 'til next time bro...I'm gonna fill it up!

I'm kinda glad you aren't posting Europe.  I really wanted to have it by now and post it, but it takes forever for it to get here.  I ordered it over 2 weeks ago.

Royal Southern Brotherhood--thumbs 3/4 up

I just read Niels comment and when that first song played, I too was thinking of Harlem Shuffle. The second song had WW geetar so it just had to be good. The whole album sounded like something from the 70's, I think Rjhog is trying to pull a Scott and claim New Music on something that was released 35 or so years ago. This stuff would fit perfectly on a 70's station.

Joe Walsh--

Will reserve judgement until I listen to the whole album next week.

RSB ... Two Thumbs 75% up

I really enjoyed the retro feel, and your right its southern rock but has a different feel to it, it has some Latin influences as well.  I hear Santana in the bass lines and also n the geetar work, especially on the second track!  Fine work! You know just got back from a graduation in Jacksonville FL, this would've been perfect for driving not only in that town but back through Georgia, SC and in Charlotte!  I like this one but thought the 3rd and 5th tracks were just so-so, I may spin it for my wife and see what she thinks as well, she likes this kind of music as well.

JOE WALSH ... Two Thumbs tapping the table to the beat!

Wrecking Ball is cool, liked that and had already heard and loved Lucky That Way.  Your right Lucky Way would have made a Long Road Out of Eden better as well as Walsh's input on that album wasn't as strong as these songs are.  Spanish Dancer is vintage Walsh, so this is working for me.  There's no attempt to try something modern or kill it with production.  This is on my purchase list, I even liked the Lynne production work it all fits and Funk 50 is a nice continuation of the Funk series!!

Joe Walsh--Thumbs Up

Listened to this one the way to work this morning and thoroughly enjoyed the album from beginning to end. I was a bit skeptical after listening to some soundbites, but those didn't do this album justice at all. I was also on the fence with Lynne as producer, but it's pretty restrained yet still sounds like a Lynne-produced album. "One Day At A Time" (not fetaured here) is the only song that sounds like something off a Travelling Wilbury's/late years ELO/Tom Petty solo album song. Plus there's plenty of geetar! He doesn't rip on every song but on his solo album he doesn't rip on every song either. Enjoyed this album immensely!

Royal Southern Brotherhood

A lot of flavors here. Not really sure, what all I'm digesting, but It was good. Just not anything that interests me enough, to entice multiple listens.

Analog Man

I liked this a lot better!!! It's classic Joe Walsh, the voice is familiar & the songs are good. I like the 5 songs listed, plus the cover track, which was featured previously.

For me, both of these are neither really good, or really bad. Not a bad listen, but not purchase material for me.

I realized late yesterday that I had picked up the regular version of the Walsh album when I really wanted the deluxe version. I thought I had found a better deal at Best Buy compared to amazon, but didn't bother to compare the track listings. Oh well, no Fishbone for me.....
