NEW MUSIC CORNER SPECIAL (VOODOO SIX/BEHIND THE SUN/ATOM STRANGE)

by RJhog

Occasionally I run across a new album that I think is worth sharing even though I don't own it.  Now, I'm not saying that I have stolen it to share with you.  In the case of Voodoo Six, this album is up in it's entirety on their website, complete with an embeddable player.  So here you go, give it a listen.  It's definitely rock and roll.  Let me know what you think.

I don't really have any bio information for you, so I'll just post the player:

I have also found a website that I think is worth sharing with you guys.  It's bandcamp.com and from what I can tell, it hosts tons of unsigned bands that want to have their music heard.  These bands put their full albums up for you to listen to, not just 30 second samples.  In some cases, if you are a legal downloading fan, you can purchase the album for whatever your willing to pay.  But in many cases you can also still purchase the physical cd.  I'll add the website to our links page in case anyone wants to explore it further.  For now, I'm gonna post two album covers that you can click to take a listen to.  These were both found in the "hard rock" genre of the site, but the site has many different genres to choose from.

So check 'em out if you want to, or just check out the site itself.  It's new music and you just might find something you really like.

I've heard (some of) this album before! Earlier NMC????

I put a Voodoo Six song in one of my IMHO lists, the one about the Classic Rock Magazine sampler discs that come with the magazine.
Ahh, it's on one of the CRM-cd's, I've heard it before!!

Behind The Sun (Thumbs slightly down)

Musically, this band is pretty good.  I think their biggest drawback is the vocalist.  At times he sounds like a combination of Jim Morrison and Ian Astbury, but not as good as either of them.  You would think from that description he might be a pretty good vocalist, but it just doesn't work for me.  The best songs here are Wishful Thinking and October '77, the latter being an instrumental with some pretty soulful guitar playing.  Not terrible, just nothing really memorable here.

Thumbs down....

I guess the thought that comes to mind is this...  Its getting tiring listening to this style over and over and over.  Current Rock and Roll needs an enema!!!  Another Nirvana, another change, another movement because this style is stale!

Wow, that was harsh!  Sorry for that, but its was honest !

Are you speaking of all 3 albums or just Voodoo Six?  Just curious.
My bad...  Just the voodoo six...  Not sure why it struck me that way, I try to be more constrcutive at times but this one just didnt hit me like that...

Atom Strange (Thumbs slightly down)

Again, like with Behind The Sun, I'm afraid the weakest link here is the vocalist.  Not a bad band by any means, just not memorable.  The best song is probably Hero Dies Alone, the closing track.  Their tags for "sounds like" include Black Sabbath, and the beginning of the song Breathe does sound like Sabbath.

This is cool, throwing support behind some unknown bands. I'll give these a listen in the next few days and will tell you what I think (since only my opinion matters, of course).

For me, Behind The Sun is middle thumbs, it was ok but not anything I wold rush out and buy. Atom Strange I'll give thumbs 3/4 up, I like this but, again, not enough to buy. What in the hell is wrong with me????

I'll get to Voodoo Six this weekend....
