NMC #48 (DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT, ELECTRIC BOYS)

by "thanks for wasting our time" Jon

Devin Townsend Project--Deconstruction (June 2011)

1. Stand

2. Planet Of The Apes

3. Sumeria

4. Deconstruction

5. Poltergeist

The 3rd album in a series of Devin Townsend Project albums, this is the heaviest. I mean HEAVY. I can also guarantee that almost all will not like this at all, but I do because it comes from the mind of Devin Townsend. All Music Guide sums it up perfectly: "In some ways, this four-disc run of work has been a signal that Devin Townsend, after breaking up Strapping Young Lad, has chosen the Mike Patton career path: nurturing a cult audience that'll buy anything he puts out, and making no effort to bring new/casual listeners in. If you already like Devin Townsend, you'll like Deconstruction. That seems to be all he cares about." Listen at your own risk.

Electric Boys--And Them Boys Done Swang (June 2011)

1. Reeferlord

2. My Heart's Not For Sale

3. Sometimes U Gotta Go Look For The Car

4. The Day The Gypsies Came To Town

5. Rollin' Down The Road

After 17 years, we finally have the fourth Electric Boys album. It's like they haven't missed a funk-metal beat. Not a bad track on the whole album, I played "Sometimes U Gotta Go Look For The Car" over and over today at quite the high volume while driving around, doing some of that errand stuff. Amazingly good album, it's on my list as a top 10 album of the year, top comeback album, etc., etc.

I'm gonna listen tomorrow. At some point, I almost picked up both of them. Now I'm gonna find out, if it was a mistake NOT to buy them.

DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT - THUMBS almost DOWN

It's not THAT bad.........or is it?....... but I don't really like the sound of MOST of the guitars, they are too heavy, like Korn or some of Marilyn Manson's albums (the solo on the first track is fine, sounds like Scott Degarmo) AND the vocals, yeah well, even the drums!! I really don't understand why on earth all of these industrial/Prog-metal "bands" have to have a "church-choir" or Musical-choir on most of their songs. Some times it works, but 90% of the time, it annoys me. I fear that there'll be more than one track on the new Dream Theater-album with "church-choir". The second track is noise, this must be the kind of music, you can use as torture. Okay, halfway through the song, it gets okay for half a minute or so. Some times, like in the end of the 3rd track, it actually sounds good. Most of the tracks ARE torture!!! This is kind of the opposite of Testimony 2, because that album made me feel SO good, when I heard it the first time. I fear, this album will ruin my sunday.

ELECTRIC BOYS - THUMBS EVEN

This is better. I have forgotten now, but aren't these guys from Sweden? Yes, they are. I just Googled them. A lot of your fellow americans probably believes that Denmark is the capital in Sweden, so I am surely able to hear that special swedish sound in their music, as well as see it in their looks. It's a style, I don't really like, and I know there will soon be released a new Opeth-album that I might have an interest in, but I've got the same problem with that band. You know, us danes are not very fond of anything swedish. I try and I try, but it's deep inside me. There's a voice inside me who says: They are from Sweden. Hate them!!!! And beat them in soccer!!!!! And Hockey, and that's a tough one!!! This is not bad, indeed NOT as bad as the Devin Townsend-album, but I'm very glad I didn't purchased any of the albums.

DEVIN TOWNSEND ... Thumbs Down except for that one part!

Deconstructing a cheesburger to its source right after flatulating! Talk about putting the cart before the horse...  OK thats all I got to say about this.  I dont like the music, at all.

I kinda figured that! That's why I included that quote cause it's TRUE!

Just now listening to this:

Cannot listen to this Devin Townsend. Dont like the vocal work at all.

But this Electric Boys? Diggin' this right away! First track comes out smoking! And absolutley LOVE the funky breakdown section in the middle of track one.

Track two has just started, and I'm immediatley adding this to my "must get" list. Jon has it right! This is killer stuff in my book!

Damn!! Track three starts with a nice drum beat...then a great bass line is added...then the guitars come in. Funky rock n roll, this is! I'm sitting at my desk here at work, and my foot won't stop stompin, and my head wont stop bobbin...where's my credit card?? Gotta order this!

Track four is starting...opening guitar reminds me of Hendrix. If CD Universe does not have this available...I'm gonna be PISSED! The best thing I can say about this track is...it's soulful rock n roll!!

Track five...funky indeed. Personally, I would not have added the horns, but it's still a good track!

Really glad I stumbled accross this post. I remember being completely SLAMMED at work throughout all of September (best month in my company's history)...so I did not listen much at all then.

One more thing about this band, "Electric Boys". If anyone saw my post on the "Beggars and Thieves" video posting, I told the story about buying a bunch of CD's, unknown and unheard, at a Media Play for just 88 cents per CD! One of the ones I took a chance on was "Groovus Maximus" by these guys. I really like that release as well.

Jon, thanks man. I really enjoyed this, and if you don't have "Groovus", you should pick it up. I'm sure you would like that one too!

Jon - you are officially the only person on this site that likes Devin Townsend...

Officially!

Like I care what you guys think....

I have all the Electric Boys, both the originals and the remastered versions. I like Electric Boys. A Lot.

And thanks Gordon and Niels...AT LEAST YOU WERE THE ONLY TWO THAT LISTENED TO THE AWESOME ELECTRIC BOYS ALBUM!!!!

ELECTRIC BOYS ...  One thumb up and the other even

I forgot to come back to this, my bad!  This is actually not too bad, I hear a lot of ZZ Top in the style, maybe its just me but some of the bluesy undertones - geetar, bass, and drum sounds reminded me of them.  Will be checking them out a little more...

PS:  I had to skip by the DT tracks but stopped on a couple of them for second or two, still dont like it!!
