Classic Rock Bottom

More unintended collusion with the Album and Lost Album of the Week postings from earlier this week...

For me, Black Sabbath is a band I didn’t grow up with.  My older brother influenced my listening more than anyone I can think of, so because he was not much of a Black Sabbath fan I was never exposed to them very much until I sat and listened to Heaven and Hell in High School - that was a life-changing listening moment.

However ... to stick with the sites theme; these 5 songs represent my earliest recollection of music I would consider "Pioneering Heavy Metal"

Lets get to it...

PLAYLIST VITALS...

Length: 19 minutes 53 seconds
Link: http://www.podsnack.com/playlists/579380855fd06268318c0244a1045323

TITLE: Traveller In Time
BAND: Uriah Heep
ALBUM: Demons And Wizards
YEAR: 1972
LENGTH: 3:23
DID YOU KNOW: The album’s title and Roger Dean's sleeve both suggest that the band was working medieval myth into their songs. To discard any possible insinuations concerning any kind of concept behind it, Hensley's note on the sleeve declared the album to be "just a collection of our songs that we had a good time recording".

This album has some hidden imagery on it as well.  For a young boy, studying the cover art was  pretty significant.  But also, the music was mystical and cool and had an aura about it no matter what Hensley said.

TITLE: Bad Bad Boy
BAND: Nazareth
ALBUM: Razamanaz
YEAR: 1973
LENGTH: 3:56
DID YOU KNOW: After getting some attention with their second album "Exercises", released in 1972, Nazareth supported Deep Purple on tour, and issued the Roger Glover-produced "Razamanaz", in early 1973. This collection spawned two UK Top Ten hits, "Broken Down Angel" and "Bad Bad Boy".

I always thought the scratchy vocals were what made this so metal!  I'm still right...

TITLE: Too Young To Know
BAND: U.F.O.
ALBUM: Phenomenon
YEAR: 1974
LENGTH: 2:25
DID YOU KNOW: Iron Maiden performed a cover of "Doctor Doctor" when Blaze Bayley was with the band as their vocalist. Traditionally, Iron Maiden plays the original UFO version at live venues to notify fans that their show is about to begin.

I read that prior to Schenker joining them they were a "Space Rock" outfit.  Creating tunes some 26 minutes long.  Man, am I glad they changed!

TITLE: Man On The Silver Mountain
BAND: Rainbow
ALBUM: Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow
YEAR: 1975
LENGTH: 4:41
DID YOU KNOW: Two of the songs on the album were cover versions. "Black Sheep of the Family" was a cover of a song recorded by Quatermass, and "Still I'm Sad" was an instrumental cover of a Yardbirds track.

My first introduction to Dio!  Classic album from top to bottom and the perfect lead-in to the next track...

TITLE: Rat Bat Blue
BAND: Deep Purple
ALBUM: Who Do You Think We Are
YEAR: 1973
LENGTH: 5:26
DID YOU KNOW: This was Deep Purple's last album with the Mark II lineup of the group until Perfect Strangers in 1984.

Machine Head was my first Deep Purple listen, but I really took to the sound of this one.  A Sonic masterpiece in my opinion!

My timings a bit off this week, so I will try to get back on the schedule soon...  Sorry if I posted on the same day others were to post as well...

Very interesting playlist Scott.  I too was a late arrival at the Black Sabbath party.  I certainly appreciate them more now than I did when I was younger.

As far as this SHT goes, I like it.  The cool thing is that all songs except Man On The Silver Mountain are totally new to me.  My favorite is easily Too Young To Know by UFO.  I ordered the box set (thanks to Jon on this one) that I think contains the first 5 studio albums, but I have no idea if this is one of those.  Either way, the box set should arrive today so I'll get to start exploring UFO soon.

Good choices Scott.

Thank you sir!  I would hope the UFO album Phenomenon would be included, in fact I'd be shocked and disappointed if it wasnt.  You will love it the most I think!  But Jon is far better with UFO than me, I have this one, Lights Out and Obsession.  All of which I love - I too need to expand ny UFO collection and soon...
It should contain "Phenomenon", if Rjhog got it way back when for $17 (or whatever it was) he got one hell of a deal since it shot up to around $34 a few weeks back.
Oooh...me likey. Me listen this weekend. My first DP album was that one, and I have never picked it up again. Wonder if it will bring back memories of stuff?

Cool, thats 2 for 2... I have liked keeping up with the AOTW and LAOTW!  I think keeping them sync'd up each week is a cool idea...

But what's next? Only two peeps know!

Go ahead take a guess...I dare thee!

You post it and I'll figure it out later...

I listened and enjoyed, but do not remember that Deep Purple song at all. Always wanted to pick it up on CD, but didn't like it when I had it on vinyl, but do like the cut you featured and like "Woman From Tokyo" so maybe I should pick this up?

I have all the songs on your list, yet own only one of the albums. Guess which one? I'll give you a hint that it's not Rainbow since I only have ever picked up "Straight Between The Eyes" and "Bent Out Of Shape". I do have the Uriah Heep al;bum on cassette, never bothered to replace on CD since I'm not a big 70's era Uriah Heep fan so you can take that one out as well.

This is so cool. Your playlist turned into something all about me!

Its gotta be the UFO album that you own!  That bands totally you!  Not that weve ever met or anything like that, Im just sayin'...
You got it! Met? Us? How? You live in like a totally different state than I do!
I knew it was you two.
