Classic Rock Bottom

A big thanks and a round of applause to Niels and RJHog for filling in for me so capably.  It’s a blast to guest host, and from the looks of things you all liked it too...

But for this week, I wanted to fuss about the last NMC I posted using a remixed, alternate version album from some 30 years ago.  This seemed to cause an issue with some people on this site.  They were wrong of course!

So that’s the genesis for this SHT list, but with a twist.  And admittedly, it’s kind of a part II, but these Hidden Treasures all come from albums that changed the rules about how I listen to music, they broke all my long standing convictions that I held dear about what was great music and what was not.

PLAYLIST VITALS...

TITLE: Meat Plow
BAND: Stone Temple Pilots
ALBUM: Purple
YEAR: 1994
LENGTH: 3:37
DID YOU KNOW: Stone Temple Pilots can trace its beginnings to a Black Flag concert in Long Beach, California in 1986, where Scott Weiland met Robert DeLeo. They began discussing their girlfriends, and, after realizing they were dating the same woman, developed a bond. They each subsequently broke it off with the girl, who left town, whereupon Weiland and DeLeo moved into her vacated apartment.

And maybe that was the inspiration for a song titled "Meat Plow" - ok probably not, but it sounded good.  For me, this album and band was an impulse buy from the used CD store.  I took it up to the listening bar and popped it in, and sat there and listened to the whole album!  I think I bought this and Core on that day.  Meat Plow is the rule changer because it was the initial track that really changed my thinking about 90's music and opening my mind up the rest of this playlist...

TITLE: Far Behind
BAND: Candlebox
ALBUM: Candlebox
YEAR: 1993
LENGTH: 5:00
DID YOU KNOW: Candlebox was the first successful act on Madonna's Maverick Records, which went on to sign Alanis Morissette, Deftones, and The Prodigy. After troubles with the label, however, Candlebox went on indefinite hiatus in 2000 after an alleged attempt to be freed from their contract. The band reunited in 2006, releasing their first studio album in 10 years and touring extensively.

Another listening bar discovery, this time at the recommendation of a friend.  I liked the debut album so well I purchased their next two albums without question.  Oops!  Oh well, we’ve all done that before.  I still get into this album every now and then so it does have staying power.  Also, Gordon has been listening to this recently as well, so it’s got to be great, right?

TITLE: Futures
BAND: Jimmy Eat World
ALBUM: Futures
YEAR: 2004
LENGTH: 3:58
DID YOU KNOW: Contrary to popular belief, the band name acronym (JEW) is not a reference to the band's religious beliefs, nor to member Jim Adkins. The band's name came from a crayon drawing made after an incident between Linton's younger brothers, Jim and Ed, who fought frequently. Jim usually won, but Ed sought revenge by drawing a picture of Jim shoving the Earth into his mouth; the picture bore the caption "Jimmy eat world".

This band came to me a little differently.  My son kept pushing them on me.  Their earlier work is not my style, but starting with Futures something was different about this band.  They became more mature, more melodic, more rock and roll!! This track really made me stop and listen.  Thanks son!

TITLE: Retrace
BAND: Anberlin
ALBUM: New Surrender
YEAR: 2008
LENGTH: 3:50
DID YOU KNOW: The album’s title explains people's need to give things up to change, "In everybody's life, there's something they know they have to give up... There's something they have to change or take care of in their lives to progress to the next step." The original explanation on the band's Myspace blog quickly spread across music news sites, with them reporting this insight on the title and how "we must change, not because we want to, but because we desperately have to."

I love this band, when I start listening to them I have a hard time stopping.  The detail in the music, their knack for melody and rhythm is uncanny.  I can’t think of any tracks that I’ve heard that I don’t like.  I’m in the process of filling Anberlins gaps in my personal collection.

TITLE: Right Down To The Bone
BAND: Electric Mary
ALBUM: Down To The Bone
YEAR: 2008
LENGTH: 4:04
DID YOU KNOW: 2009 saw them tour with Alice Cooper and Glenn Hughes as well as showcasing at Experience PRS for PRS Guitars in Stevensville, Maryland alongside the likes of Carlos Santana, Dweezil Zappa and Buddy Guy. In 2010 they supported Deep Purple.  Whilst in The States, Electric Mary collaborated with Grammy Award winning engineer/producer Jason Corsaro on a live recording (yet to be released).

This is a well-placed track in this list because this band really brings all this music and the classic rock feel back into the scene.  I can only hope they really connect with a larger audience since they are Australian it is not easy to get their new music.

No, you posted that picture on the old site...you were right about that character in "Kentucky Fried Movie"...but the Candlebox debut is a good listen! But maybe I'm partial to it...because, ya see, a few years ago, I met this really hot lady when I was in Lake Tahoe...and she happened to have that disc playing while we....got to know each other, ya see! So, I liked it before then...and now, when I hear it, I just go "I remember when.......SIGH...............

Glad to have you back Scott.

I'm so-so on the STP track, but I do have this album, though I've never listened to it.  Isn't Interstate Love Song on this album?  That's my favorite STP song.

I think Candlebox is pretty cool.  This album is good.  My biggest complaint is that the vocalist, although good, sometimes oversings a bit to me.  This song has a nice guitar solo.

Can't say I'm big on either of the next two tracks.  But I do own that Jimmy Eat World album, and I really like the song Pain.  I also have an Anberlin album, but not this one.  The Unwinding Cable Car is a very nice song by this band.

Love Electric Mary.  You guys are welcome for me bringing them here.  Funny thing is, Scott and Gordon bought the CD, but I have yet to cough up the money for it.  I'm waiting for that US release.

Well, except for Electric mary, I didn't really like anything. But do you really care? I don't have an issue with STP, but don't like this song too much. And what's with "whilst"?

So...  seems like I dont have to do a Jons Gonna hate this verison now.  This weeks playlist did exaclty that.

Whilst ...  hmmm, not my usage, it wa sa cut and paste form a web site.  I dont speak King James...

I like one song so I think you really need to do something that I can totally trash. Don't forget Bon Jovi and Poison.
I cant do Bon Jovi.  And I dont own any Poison either..

Looks like you may need another pinch hitter.

tryin' to phase me out huh....

Not hardly...just trying not to deprive Jon of the chance to hear Bon Jovi and Poison...you too for that matter.

Oh please. I really need a Bon Jovi and Poison fix. Please.
And more R.E.M.
