Classic Rock Bottom

#10 is a special request version of the SHT list from RJHog.  This weeks task?  Pick 10 from either Journey, REO Speedwagon, Foreigner, or Styx. So when the Admin speaks, us Bottom Dwellers fall into line and get busy.

Before I disclose who I picked, I want to say that it was a real headknocker as all bands are great! After reviewing the extensive catalogs from each band I got double vision and started to waffle on who I was going to pick, you know, real head games type of stuff. Oh well, that was yesterday and I decided to back off and get a long, long way from home to decide, so I took an entire blue morning and blue day to make a final decision, and that's how I picked...

... Journey ...

Heres some rules I imposed on myself.  1) Its impossible to stay away from top 40 hits, but I tried to stay away from the overplayed ones, so no Open Arms or Don't Stop Believin' for example, 2) Limit the ballads, and 3) My picks start with the Infinity release and cover up to their most current release (Revelation).

One other important omission.  I posted the track "Precious Time" from Departure on SHT List #2, so I will not double post that one, even though it is one of my favorite Journey tracks of all time. Back track and check it out when you get a minute, it is well worth it.

Let's begin this Journey...  (ok that was real bad, but what do I care, it is my list afterall...)

Title: Faith In The Heartland
Album: Revelation
Year: 2008

There are 2 versions of this song, one sung by Steve Augeri on the Generations release and this re-recording with new vocalist Arnel Pineda.  Beside the singers there is some differences in the versions but not much.  I prefer this one because the production quality and overall sound is superior.  The song is true to the Journey style and has catchy hooks in the chorus and the lead guitar.  It is also a great representation of the bands new style.  It is a rocker in the melodic spirit.

Title: Dixie Highway
Album: Captured
Year: 1981

This is the only recording of this song that I know of, but its a real good one.  Great drums, Neil kills it, and Perry's chops in a live setting are stellar.  Just a real nice jam tune.

Title: Too Late
Album: Evolution
Year: 1979

Evolution was the first Journey album I bought because of the song "Just The Same Way".  But it was Too Late that really got my attention.  As with all Journey songs, the vocals are perfect and the chorus catchy, and what a great solo.  Yes its time to make a change...

Title: Girl Can't Help It
Album: Raised On Radio
Year: 1986

When this album came out I listened to this track repeatedly before I let the needle get to any other track.  Although one may argue with Steve Perry's motive with all the changes to the band and management at the time of Raised on Radio, it's one my most played Journey albums still to this day and this song is near perfection to me.  Oh yeah, and it features Randy "American Idol Judge" Jackson on bass.

Title: Loved By You
Album: Arrival
Year: 2001

Ballad alert!  Of the great ballads this band has written, this to me is head and shoulders above all of them.  The lyrics are personal and reflective and evoke real emotion, at least in me.  The music is emotional and the guitar stylings are really quite touching.  I love the bluesy feel and treatment Schon gives these tracks.

Title: When You Love A Woman
Album: Trial By Fire
Year: 1996

Grammy award winning ballad. So according to my rules I am limiting the ballads, and these are the two I chose as the best of the catalog, above and beyond the wildly successful Open Arms for sure.  Faithfully is close though, but this track is simply a beautiful track.

Title: Escape
Album: Escape
Year: 1981

Cool title track!  Opening riff is awesome and the rhythm and lead guitars are smokin'!  Love to sing along with this one.

Title: Where Were You
Album: Departure
Year: 1980

I don't mind cause your sister's looking real good to me!  Great lyric...  I miss this era of Journey they really had some very strong stuff, and the riffs were flyin'!

Title: After The Fall
Album: Frontiers
Year: 1983

Im listening to Frontiers as I type this up.  I knew it would be tough to stay off the Top 40 tracks, but this one is just too good.  Strong album too, hard too pick just one of Frontiers tracks.  Hang on, gotta sing the chorus with the band....  ...  ...  ok I'm back.

Title: Anytime
Album: Infinity
Year: 1978

I can't leave a Gregg Rollie tune off this list.  Love his stuff and miss his presence in the band especially the shared vocals with Perry, that made for some classic work.

Got time for some Bonus Material?... Adding some Steve Perry solo stuff I thought was appropriate.

Title: You Better Wait
Album: For The Love of Strange Medicine
Year: 1994

Nice rock -n- roll track from Steve.  Signature vocal performance and a nice crunching guitar precedes the chorus.

Title: Strung Out
Album: Street Talk
Year: 1984

Think this was a pretty big hit for him.  I remember when it came out, we loved it.  Nice rhythm and great chorus

Title: When Your In Love (For The First Time)
Album: Greatest Hits + 5
Year: 1998

This is one of the "+5".  Its a nice little upbeat track, nothing special, just a nice beat and a happy little way to end this list...

Scott, Scott, Scott...As I read the grand illusion that was your intro, I peered into my crystal ball to see if the band would be Foreigner. But alas, with too much time on my hands, I started to dream of Lorelei and Suite Madame Blue. I got lost amongst the castle walls and I just feel like a man in the wilderness. Oh well, I know you've always been a renegade and the only thing I ask of you is that you don't let it end.

That was weak, I know, but the best I could do on short notice. Thanks for fulfilling my request and as soon as I get thru Jon's NMC post and LAOTW I'll be on to this excellent looking playlist.
Ok. I threw up in my mouth a little. You're such a renegade!
Whoa, hold on here. Where's the Wocka Wocka Geetar (tm). But you promisssssed!
I dedicated a whole thread, just for you, to Wocka Wocka Geetar... Looks like it got buried ....
Selfishly Toppng... Think this got buried by the mad dash for prizes... Check it out if you get a seond there is some good stuff on here...
A little bit of self-promotion going on here, hmmmmm?
Well, I do post the best stuff. Kidding.
I did finally get to listen to this a couple of days ago, and as i figured, it's a great playlist. I love Journey and they have lots of hidden gems in their catalog. Favorites here for me are:

Too Late
Girl Can't Help It
Escape
Where Were You
After The Fall
Anytime

But all tracks are excellent. As far as the Perry solo tracks go, they are okay. I really think Steve Perry needs Journey and Journey needs Steve Perry (not trying to rip Arnel, who's good, but he's no Steve Perry). I would love to hear Faith In The Heartland, Never Walk Away and Where Did I Lose Your Love with Steve on vocals. I think the former could have been a big hit for the band with him on vocals. But, unfortunately for us, that chapter of Journey is probably over. Nice post Scott, thanks for working in my request so quickly.
