Classic Rock Bottom

Stone and Biscuit was inspired by the album cover of Foghats second self-titled album.  Even though the album is also known as "Rock and Roll", I’ve always thought it was "Stone and Biscuit" because thats what my brother called it.

Either way, were taking another journey into treasures that are roots rock and roll, at least roots rock for me!

So kick back and enjoy

PLAYLIST VITALS...

TITLE: Walk Away
BAND: James Gang
ALBUM: Thirds
YEAR: 1971
LENGTH: 3:33
DID YOU KNOW: In May 1968, the group played a concert in Detroit at Motown's Grande Ballroom opening for Cream. At the last minute, Ronnie Silverman informed the others that he would not be joining them at the show. The band, desperately in need of the money, took to the stage as a trio. After discovering that they liked their sound as a threesome, the group decided to remain that way.

TITLE: Ride, Ride, Ride
BAND: Foghat
ALBUM: Foghat or Rock and Roll
YEAR: 1973
LENGTH: 4:23
DID YOU KNOW: Foghat is the second album, as well as the second self-titled album. It was released in March 1973, and is generally known by fans as Rock and Roll.  In 1993, at the urging of producer Rick Rubin, the original line-up reunited. Though Rubin ultimately would be unavailable to produce their comeback project, they went ahead and released a studio album entitled Return of the Boogie Men in 1994 and a live album entitled Road Cases in 1998.  Dave Peverett died in 2000 and Rod Price in 2005.

TITLE: Stage Fright
BAND: Legs Diamond
ALBUM: Legs Diamond
YEAR: 1976
LENGTH: 5:05
DID YOU KNOW: In 1989, Kerrang! magazine listed this album at No. 33 among the "100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time.  Often called "The American Deep Purple". They formed in Los Angeles, California in the mid 1970s and are one of the few original rock bands that have released albums in each of the last four decades.

TITLE: Never Been Sold Before
BAND: Alice Cooper
ALBUM: Muscle Of Love
YEAR: 1973
LENGTH: 4:28
DID YOU KNOW: This is the final studio album recorded by the original Alice Cooper band, and is a concept album about teenage angst, life on the streets of New York City, and implied male prostitution.  The track "Man with the Golden Gun" was intended to serve as the title song for the James Bond film of the same name. The goal was for the song's popularity to force the producers of the film to use the song. However the ploy failed.

TITLE: Strange Kind of Woman
BAND: Deep Purple
ALBUM: Fireball
YEAR: 1971
LENGTH: 4:02
DID YOU KNOW: Apart from Ian Gillan, the rest of the band doesn't consider the album a classic. However, Gillan has said that the inclusion of "Anyone's Daughter" on the album was "A good bit of fun, but a mistake". Blackmore, in particular, stated publicly that he was not overly pleased with Fireball, saying of the production, "We virtually made everything up in the studio. We were working so hard, we never had time to sit back and think of new ideas.

PS:  For some weird reason, I think Jon may be disappointed I didn’t go in a different direction with this playlist...

Started this on Friday, got interrupted, so I just finished it.

Love the James Gang song.  Probably my favorite of theirs.

I didn't really care for track 2.  I guess I'm not a big Foghat fan, but I don't hate 'em or anything like that.

The Legs Diamond track was way cool.  I know absolutely nothing about this band, but I think I wanna know more.  Would I be crazy to say it reminded me a little bit of Rush?

Alice Cooper - very nice.  Love the guitar solo.

Deep Purple - ditto from above comment on A.C.

I get the Rush thing, but I think its only vocally, although the riff in this one also has a Rush-like tone to it...

Amazon has the box set of the first 3 Legs Diamond albums used for about 28 bucks.  The individual CD's are about 14 bucks.  What do you think, good deal?

If thats The self titled debut, A Diamond Is A Hard Rock, and Fire Power, then I would say yes.

Yes, it's the first 3 studio albums.  I can't tell if they are remastered, but one review says the sound is very good.  The complaint from the same reviewer is that the packaging stinks (no jewel case and no booklet).

The first two albums are real good, the third (Fire Power) has moments but lacks the heaviness of the first two, I think they were pressured into recording a radio friendly hit.   I like it but mostly because I grew up listening to it...

They have another really nice album out called "The Wish" from 2001, thats a great album too!

This was pretty cool, the only thing that bugged me was Legs Diamond. Really? #33? I guess back then it might make sense, but where are they ranked NOW, 21 years later?

I dont think they rank anymore  ... Unfortunately theyve become the real definition of hidden treasure.

What a shame. Song wasn't bad, album cover is better.

made my top ten album covers!

Only heard the James Gang and Deep Purple off this post...both great tunes.

Having been a huge Foghat fan back in the 70's, I'm surprised I never heard this before. But I probably got tuned-in to Foghat on later releases. But I think this track is decent. Not up among their best, but not bad.

Never heard Legs Diamond before, but I like this. Like the harmony vocals on the chorus a lot. Like the guitar lead...liked the way it "built up"...started with just some power chording before actually launching into the lead. If I were to hear more of this band, I might consider buying something by them.

Never heard this Coop before either, and for me, it's kind of like the Foghat. Not great, but not bad at all. Could do without the horns being added in, though.

All in all, another fine post...enjoyed it! Now it's on to week two of Jon's solo King's X tour...

Maybe Jon would give it a forum in the LOTW in Jan or Feb next year....  That is if he and RJ are still split up... Jon?
