Classic Rock Bottom

SCOTTS HIDDEN TREASURES - (Deep Purple - Jon Lord edition)

Two things happened this past week… 1) A mutual friend of everyone on this site gave me some good advice on how to make this forum work, so I’m tweaking things around again...  and 2) Jon Lord passed away.  So sad!!

Slight tweak to the format this week - I am posting 3 tracks from a single artist.  All 3 tracks come from different albums/eras of the bands.  I think I’ve got some great ideas lined up using this format so I may stick with this until I feel like trying something new, or one of you give me another idea. (Hint! Hint!)

So in honor of Jon Lord’s passing, I’m posting Deep Purple, one track each from Mark II, Mark III, and Mark IV.

Child In Time from "In Rock". Released in early 1970 this track is just a classic jam session with Blackmore and Lord exchanging leads.  But listen to Lord’s work on this, it’s simply astounding (or as Jon from CRB would say “Fabulous”).  Some call this track “epic”, some say its Purples single greatest performance.  I say it just flat out smacks you between the eyes!

What’s Going On Here from “Burn”. Released in 1974, this is the first release from the Mark III edition. This tune sits nice in the history of the band and has stood the test of time! Oh yeah, and Lord is featured playing a cool retro keyboard solo. He’s the man (or as Jon from CRB would say “He's Fabulous”)!

You Keep On Moving from “Come taste The Band”. Released in 1975 off the one and release from Mark IV. Some say the material isn’t up to Purple standards; I dare them to give this album another try. Bolin is phenomenal (or as Jon from CRB would say “Fabulous Geetar Man! Also heard his new release and its was Fabulous as well!”). Did I mention Lords work is showcased here to?

All this tweaking and changing things up kind of gives me some new found freedom to do whatever the music tells me to do.  I like it!

Thanks Jon!  (The Deep Purple Jon in case anyone was wondering)  - You will be sorely missed!

I'm a late-comer to Deep Purple.  Of course I was familiar with Smoke On The Water and a few others from Machine Head, but that's it.  Deep Purple is in the same category for me as J. Geils Band...I want to discover more of their catalog.

Child In Time - This is a great pick that not only showcases Jon Lord's keyboard work, but the vocals and guitar work stand out as well.  I have this album but have yet to listen to it.  This song is epic, although it kind of repeats.  However, it's worthy of repeating.  Fantastic choice here Scott, one that makes me wanna check this album out.

What's Going On Here - This one is new to me as well.  It's definitely more up-tempo.  Don't you just love extended guitar solos?  What happened to those?  These modern bands need to listen to this stuff, it's not always just about the vocalist.  There's the keys.  Great piano work.  Nice jam.  The song was just okay at first, but I'm really diggin' it now.

You Keep On Moving - Once again, I've never heard it (I don't have either of the last 2 albums featured here).  This one starts out with a really nice, funky groove.  Bass with light keys.  Once the vocals kick in, my first thought for some reason is The Doobie Brothers.  And there's Mr. Lord.  This is the kind of keyboard work that should be in rock music.  Again, knock-out vocals.  Man, those backing vocals are sreaming The Doobies at me.  And you are right Scott, at least for this song, the guitar is kickin'.

Superb job my friend.  This really makes me want to buy up some back catalog.  Maybe Deep Purple needs the Discovery treatment (ala Discovering Tom Petty).

Nice!  Child In Time is the first song over 10 minutes long that I recall you enjoying!

A discovery of Deep Purple would be a great idea if you were to ask me...  Thank for the great review!

Yep, I don't typically like songs anywhere near that long, but I thoroughly enjoyed this one and fully plan on listening to the whole album soon.  That discovery idea is now on a burner.  I have something planned for 2013 (if we're still here), but I might can work it in.

Speaking of Deep Purple, has anybody read the Martin Popoff books regarding the band?

What's going on in 2013 that would cause us not to be here? That's foreboding!

No, I haven't read any of THOSE books by MP.

I was referring to the human life form, not CRB!

Crap. The Mayan calendar and the end of the world in December. Completely forgot about that.

So it went from organ, to piano and then back to organ! Nice stuff, love "Child In Time" am ok with "What's Going On" and was really pleasantly surprised at "You Keep On Moving" from a Deep Purple album I do not have and I think it's because of the cover or something. This proves that keyboards, when done right, don't "wimp out" a band.

Very nice tribute, Scott.

Thank you sir!

Like RJ, I was never exposed to much Deep Purple, with the exception of "Smoke On The Water". I don't know if it was the area we grew up in or what. Deep Purple, just didn't get a lot of attention around here.

The track "Child In Time" is Awesome!!! It pushes the limits musically & vocally! I really, like it a lot!!!

"What's Going On Here" is ok, it kind of has a bluesy feel to it. The piano is great, but that's why you featured it.

I like the vocals on "You Keep Moving On". It jams nicely, musically as well.  Yeah, I like this one too!

Nice job on the tribute!
