Classic Rock Bottom

I wanna talk about greatest hits albums.  How better to do that than a Top 5 list?  There have been some great ones over the years.  When I started jotting down possibilities, I came up with thirteen candidates.  I'm sure I've forgotten some, but even so, I had to cull eight really great greatest hits albums from my list.

I'll start it off with my Top 5.  I'll even throw in some honorable mentions.  Please join me by posting your personal Top 5.  But don't forget, the original album release must have been a single album or disc.  No double albums.  No multi-disc box sets.  A particular volume if an artist has multiple volumes is okay, but only if it was released as a single disc.  Here's mine:

Honorable Mentions:

Jimi Hendrix - Smash Hits

Bob Seger - Greatest Hits

Tom Petty And The Heartbreakers - Greatest Hits

The Doobie Brothers - Best Of The Doobies

The Beatles - 1

Elvis - The Number One Hits

Rolling Stones - Rewind

The Cars - Greatest Hits

5. Heart - Greatest Hits (Released 1998)

4. Creedence Clearwater Revival - Gold (Released 1972)

3. Foreigner - Records (Released 1982)

2. Eagles - Their Greatest Hits (1971-1975) (Released 1976)

1. Journey - Greatest Hits (Released 1988)

So were looking for the Greatest Greatest Hits?  I had to create some rules for myself,

  • no extended editions
  • no Anthologies
  • no bands who release a greatest hits package every other year
  • no bands whose greatest hits really weren't hits at all

So...  heres mine

5.  The Best of Earth Wind and Fire Vol. 1

4.  Chicago IX - Greatest Hits

3. The of Kansas

2. The Best of BTO

1.  Eagles - Their Greatest Hits 71-75

The WHAT of Kansas?

Best...

And then there's this

Hilarious!

The amazon review for Vanilla Ice and the last line of the best moments for Nelson are too damn funny.

5. The Doobie Brothers--Best Of The Doobies

4. Golden Earring--The Continuing Story Of Radar Love

3. UFO--Essential UFO

2. MSG--Essential Michael Schenker Group

1. Donnie Iris--The Millenium Collection

Why oh why does it have to be a single-disc? Some of my absolute favorite "Greatest hits-albums" are double-cd's, and I LOVE the fact, that they are double-cd's. Among the very best are "KINKS - The Ultimate Collection", "The Best Of The Doors", "The Best Of Black Sabbath", "Retrospectable: The Supertram Anthology" and "Decade" by Neil Young.

But luckily my absolute favorite greatest hits cd is a single cd, so here we go:

5. Queen - Greatest Hits (The first album, from 1981)

4. The Who - My Generation- The very best of..

3. 10CC - The Very Best Of..

2. Tom Waits - Used Songs (1973-80)
and ....DAH-DAAH:

1. Frank Zappa - Strictly Commercial

Honorable mentions are:

Paul McCartney - All The Best
Syevie Wonder - Song review: A Greatest Hits Collection.

Somebody else should make up a Top 5 Greatest Hits of any type thread.

...That's STEVIE Wonder, Jon.

Ah...thought it was a Dane!

5. Rush- Spirit of Radio: Greatest Hits 1974-1987

4. The Rolling Stones- Jump Back: The Best of The Rolling Stones

3. The Doors- Greatest Hits (released sometime in the '90s)

2. Van Halen- The Best of Both Worlds

1. Foreigner- No End in Sight: The Very Best of Foreigner
