Classic Rock Bottom

There ain't that many good "New Years"-video's and songs out there, so to say, that this is a special edition of VOTW, is wrong. And then again, there IS one New Years-video, and no, it's NOT U2. There's also 4 new video's and 2 classic, and one of them should be a little cheesy, or is it? Here we go:

1. GEORGE HARRISON - DING DONG, DING DONG

And here it is: The only video/song in VOTW, that has anything to do with "New Year". This is from 1974, and I can't say, that I remember it from back then, but I have heard it many times before.

2. VOYAGER - LOST

I don't know much about this band. RJhog found this on YouTube and send it to me. It's a song from their latest album "I am the Revolution" from 2009. It's a rather old band, because the first album was released in 1979, but that's all I know. Maybe RJ knows more?

3. CROWBAR - THE CEMETARY ANGELS

This is a Metal band from New Orleans, and this is from their not yet released new album, and that's about it.

4. ALICE IN CHAINS - LAST OF MY KIND

Lastest video from the 2009-album "Black gives way to blue".

5. STONE SOUR - HESITATE

And the last one, of the new ones. I know, I've posted video's from Stone Sour before, but here is the newest one, from their album "Audio Secrecy" from 2010.

6. THE KINKS - DON'T FORGET TO DANCE

Even though Kinks was best in the 60's and the very beginning of the 70's, this is one of my absolute favorites of theirs.

7. LIZZY BORDEN - WE GOT THE POWER

From the album "Master Of Disguise" from 1989, maybe the greatest year for cheesy video's?!!

Hilarious haircut on George!  Loved the retro Beatles outfit also.  And then being naked with furry boots, hahaha, now I know where Flea got that from!  I think the people in the background became more interesting as the video played on.  And of course George isn't really singing about new years, its a pro-Hindu tune at the core, "ring out the false, ring in the true" with a Hindu priest behind him hardly disguises the intended message.  I don't care for that part of it, but it's who he was, so its a nice video to remember him by.  But...  The tune isn't really that good and the video is not any better.  0 points for both.

VOYAGER ... (.75 points)
I know nothing of this band either. Video is interesting although the Matrix theme has been played out before, they did it in a cool way by mixing in TRON-like elements.  haha, I don't like either movie but that's what comes to mind.  hmmmmm.  Also, love their musicianship, but cant figure why its not translating into a song I like.  May have to look into this band a little more...  .5 for the video and .25 for the song.

CROWBAR ... (-1 points)
ugh...  Cookie monster vocals and the singer is an older guy, weird!  I don't like this one at all.  The tune isn't really very good and the video is out of sync at times with the singer.  -1 point for an uninspired tune and 0 points for the video.

ALICE IN CHAINS ... (.5 points)
Depressing band.  My opinion only as I know this a favorite of many on this site.  Its just a style issue for me.  0 points for the song.  I do like their stage act though.  .5 points

STONE SOUR ... (2 points)
Like Like Like!  I love the suspended in time feel and the song is cool. Why havent I purchased this yet?  Need to fix that ASAP!  2 points!

THE KINKS .. (.5 points)
OK Mike Pell has been trying to get me and RJ to like these guys for quite awhile now.  Now Niels is piling on.  hahaha.  The video and tune is familiar though.  Was this the follow-up to Come Dancing?  The song is just ok for me, I enjoyed it mostly because I liked hearing something I haven't heard in years. .25 points.  The video is silly though it was better than most for the time it was done.  .25 points.

LIZZY BORDEN ... ( .25 points with a cheese factor of 5)
I like the sound of the their guitars!  Alot!  Cant figure out what the 3 girls in the boxes are for.  Are the airplane controls their holding suppose to be some sort of power throttle?  The singer dude is a little awkward too, whats with the eyes?  The singer held this band back its seems clear thats true.  The tune is nice, the singing sucks!  OK Cheese points...  chicks in boxes, bass player who wants to be Rudy Sarzo, bad special effects on the electricity coming out of the singer at the end.  .25 for cool guitars and not much else, and cheese factor of 5.
Scott, I must say, that I do enjoy to read, what you have to say about the video's every week. Thanks for the input.
The Lizzy Borden video gets 2 points from me, and while the cheese factor may be considered high nowadays, his Master of Disguise CD was pure awesomeness when it was released.

George Harrison (0.5 points)

The song isn't particularly good or bad just repetitive as hell.  The video was so bad that I'm giving it 0.5 points.  Yes, that's right, it was bad, but it entertained me quite well.  You know, some bad stuff is good, kinda...

Voyager (1.5 points)

I dig the song a lot.  I don't know anymore about the band than what Niels told you.  I was actually reading about the band Dommin on Amazon and one of the reviewers mentioned this, so I looked it up.  I didn't watch it or listen to it at the time, so this is the first time I've heard the whole thing.  Anyway, the video's not bad either.  I'll say 1 point for the song and 0.5 points for the video.

Crowbar (N/A)

Video is no longer available.

Alice In Chains (1.5 points)

I like AIC, even this version, but I don't think this is the album version.  It sounds different, probably a somewhat live version.  The song get's a full point and the video get's 0.5 points...it would have been a little lower but they through in the nod to Van Halen at the end which instantly boosted the overall score.

Stonesour (1 point)

That's a pretty good song.  The vocalist has a pretty good voice when he just sings normally.  The video was kind of cool as well.  The frozen people were neat.

The Kinks (1.5 points)

This seems to be a common score for me this week.  I do like that song.  I don't remember if I've heard it on one of Mike Pell's shows or not, but it's a very nice, easy listening song.  The video is okay, not great but not bad.  I'll say 1 point for the song, a half point for the video.

Lizzy Borden (1.25 points / Cheese Factor 3)

I figured I would not like this at all, but the song is actually pretty good.  I'll give it 0.75 points, and I really liked the "shout it out loud" lyric.  The video didn't seem all that cheesy to me. That's a surprise, as so many of the late 80's videos are terribly cheesy.  The biggest cheese moment was when the singer slid open the door an his hair blew back, but I guess the oversinging of the backing vocals by the guitar players was pretty cheesy too.

Niels, sorry it took me so long to get to this, my home has been chaotic throughout this holiday season, but you made some fine picks as usual.

You're forgiven, RJhog. But you were too late for the Crowbar-video, but you have'nt missed much.
