Classic Rock Bottom

When I started with VOTW, it was ONE video pr. week, then two, then five I think, and the last couple of weeks, it has been eight video's. How many is too much? I'll try to post ten video's this week, but if it's too many, let me know. It won't ever be more than ten, I'll promise you that. The first seven are a mix of VERY new, and not THAT new videos', and the last three are classic's, and this time, the last video is NOT cheesy at all, but maybe the other 2 are?

1. EVERGREY - WRONG

Brand new single from swedish band, Evergrey. This is from their new album "Glorious Collision".

2. WHITESNAKE - LOVE WILL SET YOU FREE

New single from their coming new album, out later in 2011. These days, I only know David Coverdale from the band (I think). Once it was half of Deep Purple, with Ian Paice on drums and Jon Lord on keyboards. Those were the days (imo)

3. FOO FIGHTERS - WHITE LIMO

Also from their forthcoming album, Foo Fighters with a new song and a video featuring Lemmy from Motörhead. Lemmy's everywhere these days, is'nt he?!

4. LETHARGY - A LOST ADORATION

Taken from the album "Purification" released november 3rd 2008.

5. HELL IN THE CLUB - ON THE ROAD

From their debut-album "Let the games begin" released in 2011. I THINK, they are from Italy.

6. WOLF - SPEED ON

This is taken from their 2009-album "Ravenous". Nice to hear some 80's metal from a current band.

7. KATATONIA - MY TWIN

Another swedish metal band. I THINK this is from the 2009-album "Night is the new day", or maybe it's not.

8. MAGNUM - DAYS OF NO TRUST

I WAS considering, posting a video every week, in the line of "I saw a concert on that tour", and then this video would fit in just fine. Magnum was (are, perhaps, they've just released a new album) an okay 80's-band IMO.

9. SMALL FACES - LAZY SUNDAY

This must be one of the oldest video's or promo's I've ever posted. Small Faces from 1968. Some of these dudes changed their band-name to Faces a few years later, and was joined by Rod Stewart and Ron Wood.

10. TOM WAITS - GOD'S AWAY

Now, I don't expect any of you to like this song or video, but I really love Tom Waits. That special style of his is great! He's a great pianist, percussionist and (if you can call it that?) singer/songwriter, and Hollywood-actor by the way.

Niels, I love the VOTW feature.  It's a lot of fun looking back on old videos and it's cool to hear some new music as well.  If you are truly looking for opinions on the quantity of videos, my vote would be for a few less.  But let me say why.  For VOTW, you have to pay attention.  If there are 10 videos that average 4 minutes each, that's 40 minutes that I have to devote to it.  That's difficult for me 'cause I watch these at home, and with a 6 month old I just don't have a lot of time.  The playlists and albums I can listen to in the background while I'm working, so they are easier for me to get to.  Does that make sense?  It's really not a criticism at all, because I'll keep watching no matter what.  But I'd personally be more comfortable around 6 videos.
Yeah, you're probably right. Ten are too many. 6 or 7 it is.

Yeah, Rjhog is right. An album is something you can have playing in the background and still work etc. With the videos you do have to watch them. And he's right, it's not a criticism at all, but 10 is loony! Loooooooony I say!

But it's your column so do whatever's you want.

Putting my vote in for 5 or 6.  I look forward to the VOTW posts, but agree that 10 is difficult to provide feedback on.

Onto this weeks post....

EVERGREY ... 0 points
An abandoned room/warehouse with post-it notes all over the walls.  I can feel the creativity oozing out of every pore of my favorite director!  Or maybe he watched "A Beautiful Mind" before this latest creative streak?  So is this a love song?  I cant tell since I lost interest about half way through.  0 points for everyone!

WHITESNAKE ... 2 points
Their "Good To Be Bad" release is pretty darn good so when I seen this video released last week I watched right away.  I liked it alot at first listen, but read that the song is actually middle of the road compared to the rest of the album.  I would agree the song is good, not great, and it sounds better on it second go 'round! If this is the middle of road song for this album, I will buy as soon as it comes out.  1 point for the song.  I am going to excuse them for using the abandoned warehouse director because the pole dancing scene was ... AWESOME!!  And I loved the White Fox ending..  1 point for that as well

FOO FIGHTERS ... 1.5 points
I love these guys, Niels made this list just for me!  I know Jon wont like this one though.  Love the old school drum kit!  The toms look like thay were lifted straight off Jackson Brownes 'Running On Empty' album cover!  1 point for the video, but only a half point for the tune.  Predictably, I didnt like the vocal!

LETHARGY ... 0 points
I think Websters said it perfectly...

Defintion for Lethargy.
1. tiredness: a state of physical slowness and mental dullness resulting from tiredness, disease, or drugs
2. lack of energy: lack of energy, activity, or enthusiasm

HELL IN THE CLUB ... 1.5 points
Liked the tunes start!  Liked the video start too.  The Utah license plate is throwing me for a curve though. I just hope they dont use the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for any backing vocals because that would distract me from this otherwise, really cool song and video!  Oh thank goodness they avoided them.  They shall be rewarded accordingly!  .75 each for song and vid!  Now they need to leave that state and get touring!

WOLF ... 1 point
Kind of an Iron Maiden riff thing happening. Like that opening.  Nice song, nice tight playing!  I like this.  Video is just OK though.  I think they were trying to play on the grim reaper thing with the black and white theme, but it was literally too dark to watch.  I would have liked to see more detail in the video.  But not bad stuff here for a first listen.

KATATONIA ... .25 points
I'm torn on whether I like this or not.  Some parts of the song seem cool, others kind drone on and on.  OK the droning is taking over and ruining what I thought was a promising start.  .25 for the song, 0 for a boring video.

MAGNUM ... .25 points
I can't watch that singer.  Its not that he's bad, its his "Maestro" like actions, annoying!  Who on this management team failed them?  To let your lead singer go out and do that is not doing the band any favors.  Of course, letting them steal everyone elses look and sound probably didnt help either.  The song is ok, not too bad but completely uninteresting.

SMALL FACES ... 0 points
Im glad they went out and picked up Rod Stewart!  I can see why... Interesting to see Kenny Jones at that age though...

TOM WAITS ... 0 points
The original cookie monster vocalist!  I would never question his writing ability as many artists have recorded his work with huge success, but this is just, well...  silly!

Crap...I had this halfway done and lost it so am starting again.....

Evergrey--1 point
Singer got way too much into the song, so much so that it turned into camp. Song was cool though, video was basic.

Whitesnake--2 points
I had given up on Whitesnake after those 2 crap 80's albums (yes, I said it) and was hesitant to buy their last album. And I was suprisedsince it absolutely smoked. Did anyone notice that at some points during the video that David looked a bit like Alice Cooper? And yes, pole dancing is cool.

Foo Fighters--1/2 point
Never have gotten into the Foo Goo Fighter Dolls and this ain't gonna change that. However, Dave spewing out of the car window was funny and the whole video was actually fun. Hopever, who was REALLY driving: Lemmy or Toonces?

Lethargy--1/2 point

Song was decent but I must admit I started reading something on another site and missed most of the video but think that it was a band in a brick warehouse with footage of stuff blowing up? Did I miss anything. And the singer sounded a bit like Chris Cornell.

Hell In The Club--negative 2 points so -2

Crap. Singer spent too much time looking into the camera which annoyed me. Song sucked. Did I mention this was crap. Video was whatever. Didn't care. Waste of my time. Best part was at the very end and it stated (hopefully FOREVER) "The End". And lay off Utah!!!!!!!!!!!!!  \

Wolf--2 points

I was raving about this band on the other site way back when. Have a few albums and you can't go wrong picking them up. Video simplistic but it's Wolf, man!

Katatonia--2 points

Got me the Opeth vibe on this one. Lik how the band, especially the singer, were vry low key which fit the song perfectly. And the cigarette scene? Cool! Actually whole video kept my interest.

Magnum--0 points

Damn, this song SUCKED. Good thing I never, ever picked up anything from this band. The video was typical 80's fodder.

And now the song is stuck in my head. Thanks Niels!

Faces--1 point

Nice for a vintage video. I got a Monkees vibe for some reason. The song was nice.

Tom Waits--1 point

Yes it's weird. But heck, this guy is an icon. So I'll give it a point. However, if I listened to this more than once I would probably tear my kidneys out. Video was wild. So I dropped some acid and it got wilder! Yay me!

Evergrey (1.25 points)

The song is really good.  The singer sounds like the singer from Sevendust.  I know a lot of bands today sound like other bands today, but the difference is the quality of the song, and this is a high quality song to me.  The video is a performance video that's fairly uninspired, but I'll give it a quarter point because it's shot in black and white.

Whitesnake (2 points)

Nice, very nice.  I agree with Jon, the last Whitesnake album was very good, hopefully this one will be just as good.  Sometimes, however, when the first single is really good, the album isn't.  David Coverdale needs to get rid of the makeup and just face the fact that he's old and has wrinkles.  And what's with that woman dancing with that pole?  Is that a sport or something?  Is there a place where one could actually watch such an activity in person?  And does it cost money?  Just curious.

Foo Fighters (1.25 points)

That video is outstanding.  The FF's are ultra cool, but the song leaves a little to be desired.  I like the chorus, but I'm not a fan of the vocals on the verses.  Oh well, sometimes when the first single from an album doesn't work that well for you, the album totally kicks.

Lethargy (1.5 points)

I'm gonna give this band a little more of a chance than some people that like to quote the dictionary :-) :-) :-)

But  I just bought this album, so that's why.  Also, I like the fact that this band has two different vocalists.  You don't see that a lot these days like you used to.  I don't have any idea if they both sing throughout the album 'cause I've haven't gotten around to listening to it yet.  But I like the idea anyway.  The video gets a half point simply because it's black and white and it has old newsreel footage, two things that I dig.

Hell In The Club (0.5 points)

A half point strictly for the two chicks in the video, especially the brunette.  The song, although not bad, just isn't that memorable.

Wolf (1 point)

Hey, Jon turned us on to this back on CRR and I bought the album.  I've never really gotten around to checking it out.  I guess I need to quit searching out new music and listen to some that I already own.  The song's pretty good, so 0.75 points.  The video doesn't do much for me, but I'll award 0.25 points for black and white.

Katatonia (1.5 points)

That's a pretty cool song.  Actually, that a really cool song.  I may have to add this band to my "need to check this band out" list.  Other than the brunette, the video wasn't doing much for me until he opened up the fridge.  That was awesome.

Magnum (- 2 points)

You know, the best 80's melodic rock was created before December 31, 1989.  Song is no good.  Video is easily just as cheesy as anything from the 80's.

Small Faces (1 point)

Strictly for the video.  And, like Jon, I get the Monkees vibe.

Tom Waits (0 points)

I just don't get it.  To me, this is no better than black metal where the vocalist just screams.  He may very well be a legend, and I know Niels really likes him, but I could never listen to this.  Does he sing like this on all of his songs?

I'm amazed, that none of you like Magnum?! In 1986, I had them on third place on my pesonal "Album of the year" with "Vigilante". Only "Rage for order" and "Turbo" were better albums imo.

Regarding Tom Waits: No, he does'nt sing like that all the time, and if anyone would be interested, I woul very much like to make a IMHO-list. Does anyone wants to stop me???????
