We continue.
Today, Manfred Mann’s Earth Band’s music is called Progressive Rock.
Back in those beginning days of free-form FM Radio in 1966-67 we had a much looser definition- anything they DIDN’T play on AM was progressive rock!
It was simpler, and I hate labels anyway.
Got a couple of Angel songs to begin this one, one of them, yes, another Bob Dylan song covered by the Earth Band.
Then one I like called Questions- which reminds me very much of the old band Procol…

I am always honest with you.
So I must tell you that sometimes putting a Podcast up can be a royal pain in the ass!
That is the case with this one.
Not the content, but from a technical standpoint. It was a struggle.
If you only know Manfred Mann from the 60’s pop singles group, you will be very surprised by what he moved into as Manfred Mann’s Earth Band.
He headed in a much more “progressive” direction.
I’ll begin this with a Springsteen song and a classical…

I am putting this show up now.
As the week goes on you will see why.
Coming back with Manfred Mann, we’ve got Pretty Flamingo by them.
Then another of their many interpretations of Bob Dylan songs- this time his Just Like A Woman.
Manfred Mann was on of the few groups to successfully replace their lead singer and still remain at the top of their game.
The not so well known You Gave Me Somebody To Love is next, and the opening piano riff reminds me off the Vince…

I am putting this show up now.
As the week goes on you will see why.
I think I can guarantee you a fun time with this one,
it was a treat for me to do!
The music of that 60’s British Invasion group, Manfred Mann.
Just wait till you hear these songs- the memory section of your brain will be in overdrive.
We will start off with a countdown, 5-4-3-2-1.
The band was asked to provide a new theme for the famous British TV music show, Ready, Steady,…

I am going to open up this last half of Back To Back To School with a question.
A question regarding Teachers who use propaganda to brainwash kids, and although the song is from 1964, the situation has never been worse than it is today.
Then it is on to how maybe the reason I hated school was because when you think about it, the whole day for a kid revolves around it. and being told what to do.
So quickly the Rebel comes into our show, not unlike myself, making the Teachers…

This was the 3rd show I had planned before I was so rudely interrupted last September.
Well not exactly what I had planned, since I added songs in the course of the year, and a different time in free-form radio brings different results.
NO songs from last year will be repeated- all distinct selections for this 2010!
It is that most awful time of year again, resulting in going Back To Back To School, kicking and screaming!
I will open with a school that I might, just might,…

Here is some of a back and forth between RJ and I, regarding a series I did- The Cycle Of Life- and he suggested I put it out here.
He had asked me about my disappearing in a huff one time.
And yes, it is true- I did quit radio for a while over this and some other things.
Possibly a couple of more people will listen to the series, cause I still feel not enough did, lol!
Maybe next I’ll put up the other tipping point series, Money & The Financial Crisis, another somewhat…

The concluding Part from last year that is exclusive to you- a musical look at Teachers.
Opening back up with one more GOOD Teacher song, this time a title song from a movie.
You are forewarned, both the movie and the song are so sweet, you may fall into a diabetic coma!
And notice, as I will comment upon in this episode, that none of these fictional teachers are from books- just movies & TV.
Maybe because kids can’t read.
Just a thought…cynical as it is,…

Another Part from last year that is exclusive to you- a musical look at Teachers.
You know, Teachers have to go Back To School too.
I wonder how they feel about that?
Not as miserable as I was, I’ll bet, lol!
We will begin this musical look at Teachers with some words- funny words- from New York City’s own (the Bronx), and former NYC substitute teacher, Robert Klein.
Opening a very long set.
After that, well, there are Good Teachers and Bad Teachers- the ones…

EXCLUSIVE to those here at Classic Rock Bottom...not like I am a big deal, lol!
This is the first hour of a series I did last year- just before our station closed down.
There had been rumors it was going to happen, and they turned out to be true.
But we quickly found a new home.
Coming next a look at Teachers.
I had songs left over and I am thinking of finishing this year.
Let me know what you think.

Alright- cruises, boats, etc.- you need Sailors.
That is where I am going in this one.
And when I say sailor, who is the first one you think of?
I have a real good set about Sailors, and since we had the wind, I lengthened it even more.
Then a change of pace to an entirely different kind of seagoing vessel, with a button-down mind, then the World’s Greatest Group!
This one has the usual surprises I hope you have come to expect.
(Stick around for the…

I thought I would try something different here, for this last official week of the season- an End Of Summer Cruise, using music as our proxy means of travel.
Whether the Cruise is on a lake, a river or the ocean- I got you covered.
Although if it is on an ocean, we might be lucky enough for some whale-watching!
Further, if you are tight for money and can’t afford a cruise, or if you don’t have a boat of your own, well, we can BUILD our own!
Which is just what we will do,…

Wow did it get cool here in New York City!
But there was an awful lot of heat coming from that picture.
My memory is that for months after, when I would pass the remains of the World Trade Center, it was still burning in certain areas.
Those rescue workers went through a lot- brave and uncomplaining.
This time out I will tell you how I feel about the proposed community center and mosque near Ground Zero.
Want to take a guess?
And there will be songs with…

Been a while since we did one of these traditional remembrances.
Not that I forgot- 2 years ago I was doing the Salute To Radio for my 10th Anniversary that ran into Sept.11th, and last year we were getting kicked out of our radio station.
No selfishness here, New York Songs because I am a New Yorker, do a show for that station that is back and running in New York, we took the biggest hit from those nitwit islamic terrorists, and there are simply more songs about New York than any…

Here are both halves of the Sept.11th 2007 broadcast- the ONLY time my show has ever fallen on Sept.11th since it did on the fateful day.
As it happened, that show in 2001, the Beach Boys as I recall since Summer was ending, was never broadcast because the transmitter was atop one of the Twin Towers that came crashing down.
Thanks,
Mike
PART THREE
As today is September 11th, this will be a more serious chapter than the ones before it.
This is our Pearl…

Tomorrow night I will be posting Part One of this year's 9/11 remembrance with New York City Songs and more.
If you are interested, I did TWO WEEKS of shows in 2007, Sept.4 & Sept.11- the ONLY time the show has ever fallen on Sept.11th.
Here are both halves of the Sept 4th broadcast.
The Sept. 11th one will follow as the week progresses.
I thank you,
Mike
PART ONE
As we approach the 6th Anniversary of 9/11, I will continue with a tradition I started…

Did I mention Paul McCartney has said the Beach Boys' Pet Sounds was the driving force for Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, lol?
He also has said God Only Knows is the best song ever written.
We continue with the other side of the album.
And in the interest of aural purity, I want you to know that I played the vinyl mono version of Pet Sounds for these two parts- the way Brian Wilson intended it to be heard.
Enjoy!
Here's the link to pet the Pets, at…

Since I have been on vacation, a REAL traveling around vacation, not just one from radio like before, here's an old show from 2006.
I did it for the 40th Anniversary of the Pet Sounds album, so add 4 years to everything I say, lol!
It was, and still is, a landmark album.
And it is commonly accepted as the challenge to the Beatles that resulted in Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.
That fact alone makes it worth a listen.
Plus, even before the Beatles, the Beach Boys…

The Psychotherapy series ends with another Breakdown, then some final words from a Therapist that Love is a minefield.
No doubt about it, Love has made all of us a bit Crazy at some point in our lives.
So I decided to take the Crazy route.
And looking at all the choices I had for Crazy songs, I realized they could be a musical Genre of their own!
Several shows could be done on that Theme alone.
So it has been filed away in my memory for the future.
I hope you enjoy…

Well well, August 25 is the 12th Anniversary of my being at the same station.
12 years...those people there REALLY need Psychotherapy!
These are some of the Psychotherapy Leftovers we never got to in the other chapters, and I must tell you, this is one of the strangest half hours of musical selections I have ever done.
Certainly the most somber in those 12 years!
I just went where the free-form Muse took me, and that was a weird place.
So you are forewarned, and the…
