Classic Rock Bottom

NEW MUSIC CORNER #23 (Atomic Tom, Spocks Beard, Steve Lukather)

NEW MUSIC CORNER #23
December 9th 2010
by Scott

What does a new band, a prog band and one of rocks best guitarists have in common?  You guessed it, they are all featured in this week's NMC!

Enjoy...

ATOMIC TOM - THE MOMENT (July 2010)
1. Let Let Go Tonight
2. The Moment
3. Take Me Out
4. We Were Never Meant To Be
5. Play That Dirty Girl

(From PUREGRAINAUDIO.COM)
For some reason when I read the name ‘Atomic Tom’ I assumed this band would make some kind of weird fuzz/punk/garage/indy music. I don’t know why that’s what I was expecting, but it was. I was really surprised when it turned out to be a traditional, serious rock record.

This record is definitely worth a listen if you’re into alternative or rock bands like Bloc Party, Our Lady Peace or even The Killers. There’s something to be said for really talented rock bands, and it seems like Atomic Tom are just that

SPOCKS BEARD - X (Sept 2010)
6. Edge Of The In Between (length=10:29)
7. From The Darkness (length=17:10)
8. The Quiet House (length=9:12)

(From PROGARCHIVES.COM)
The reality is that there is so much of this album to explore. This is more than a complete offering: it is Spock's Beard removing the monkey off of their back and getting back down to the business of creating great music. It is a thoroughly enjoyable listen, and hopefully marks an exciting new direction from a band that has made some great contributions to progressive music in the present day. "X" is easily worth 5 stars.

STEVE LUKATHER - ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL (Oct 2010)
9. Darkness In My World
10. On My Way Home
11. Flash In The Pan
12. You'll Remember
13. Tumescent (Instrumental)

(From GUITAR-CHANNEL.COM)
The new album is laden with extraordinary guitar playing performed across some of the best and most emotional songs of Steve’s career. Fee Waybill of the Tubes is featured on backing vocals and contributes to some of the co-song writing with CJ Vanston and Lukather.

Ooooh...this should be good! Must take a listen, I must!

I think so to !!!  :-)

I almost listened today, but I saved it for tomorrow.

ATOMIC TOM - THUMBS UP

This is really good. I like the kind of '80s sound. All the songs are good.

SPOCKS BEARD - THUMBS WAY UP

This is GREAT!! Very good prog-rock. I've never heard of these guys (well, I have'nt heard of Atomic Tom either). This could be a purchase?!!

STEVE LUKATHER - THUMBS SIDEWAYS, SLIGHTLY DOWN

Yeah, well, it's kind of okay, I guess, but imo, when Lukather sang on one of the classic Toto-albums, the song was a bit booring, and his solo-albums are booring too. I have his first solo-album(?) from around 1990. I've only heard it once. I  don't think, I want to hear this again, well perhaps around bed-time.

Great post, Scott!!

Atomic Tom--Middle thumbs

Eh..kind of reminded me of U2, not that there's anything really wrong with that I suppose. Just was "there" for me.

Spock's Beard--Up Thumbs

I have one album from them, the one about Powder. Or someone like Powder. This is good stuff! Do yourself a favor and check out "Sola Scriptura" from Neal Morse that came out a few years ago. Great album.

Steve Lukather--Up Up Thumbs

I REALLY like this. Sounds like a continuation of "Kingdom Of Desire" (to me at least). Fantastic geetar work, not that you would expect anything less.

A dang fine posting Scott!

Heres an interesting video on Atomic Tom.  Even if you dont like it you will find this video very unique and interesting...  I will weigh in with my feedback later in the day

So is this true or just a marketing ploy to make me feel bad for them and buy their album so they can buy new instruments?

If their all carrying around iPhones and Macbooks I wouldn't feel too bad for them!

Ahhh..it's a commercial.

I would have to agree that is most likely...

Atomic Tom (Thumbs Up)

I liked this.  I agree with Jon about the U2 sound, but it's actually better than current U2.  The only song that didn't work for me was the first track, but everything else was really good.

Spocks Beard (Thumbs Sideways)

This wasn't bad, but I'm not a huge fan of prog.  The songs are just too long for me.  I like shorter songs for my simple mind.

Steve Lukather (Thumbs Sideways)

Again, this isn't bad.  It's somewhat easy listening.  I think he has a good voice and is obviously a very good guitar player.

Sorry about the spotty reply Scott.  This text editor is giving me fits.  I don't know if anyone else is having the same problem or not.  If I use the underline or bold it wants to underline and bold everything, and I'm having trouble turning it off.  The response time is also anemic as I'm typing and my reply shows up about a minute later.
