I want you to put some thought into this question. I think we can all agree the state of classic rock radio is pathetic these days. I am so sick of the ever shrinking playlist and repetition of the same tired songs. Let's pretend there is a classic rock/hard rock radio station not owned by one of the corporations like Clear Channel, so you have much more freedom in terms of a playlist. Pretend you are the program director and are assigned to design a two hour playlist for classic rock radio. The songs must be from the classic rock or classic hard rock genre (preferably a bit of a mix)

 

Here are the rules:

1) You cannot repeat the same artist twice.

2) You will program two hours of music with each hour containing ten-twelve songs.

3) Your playlist must be somewhat realistic. In other words, don't program something like Death Angel who never had any chance of airplay.

4) The songs must be radio appropriate. In other words, if they contain a lot of profanity, etc don't list them because we are talking about "corporate" radio.

5) Mix your playlist up.

I'm loosly reading Scandal's playlist, because I don't want it to have any influence on mine.  I think another thread for more obscure bands would also be fun, and I would participate.

Ok, heres my playlist for a classic rock station...1st two hours of existence!

 

Hour one:

 

1. "Drivin' Wheel" by Foghat - good upbeat tune that rocks. "Slow Ride" is all the classic station in Atlanta ever plays!

2. "Hitch A Ride" by Boston. The guitar lead in the ending section of this song is fantastic!

3. "Not Faking It" by Nazereth. Hey, its my program, so I can add this "deep album cut" if I wanna!! Great sing-a-long chorus on this tune!

4."You Got That Right" by Lynyrd Skynyrd. "Free Bird" and "Sweet Home Alabama" ARE NOT the only great songs Skynyrd ever did! The vocal trade-off between Steve Gaines and Ronnie Van Zant in this tune are great! May they rest in peace!

5. "Out Of Control" by Ted Nugent. Another great deep album cut from "Cat Scratch"...great guitar by Ted, and great vocal work by Derek St. Holmes.

6. "Night Moves" by Bob Seger. A great little tune about "young life"!

7. "Too Hot To Handle" by UFO. Late 70's era UFO should have been huge! Great sing-a-long chorus, and smokin' guitar from Michael Schenker on this classic!

8. "All I  Want To Be (Is By Your Side)" by Peter Frampton. Atlanta classic radio plays "Do You Feel Like I Do" so much that its silly. This is a chance to slow things down a little and add in some accoustic guitar.

9. "Easy Livin" by Uriah Heep. Cranks it back up with a fast, up-tempo, classic rocker.

10. "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath. From slow to fast to medium...and extremely heavy!

11 "In The Evening" by Led Zeppelin. One of the less played Zeppelin songs (on radio), but still a great tune, with that "spacey" sounding intro, that just builds up and really starts the tune off well.

12. "Beer Drinkers and Hell Raisers" by ZZ Top. A classic barn burner, party song to close out hour 1...and just two outstanding lead sections from the Reverend Billy Gibbons!

HOUR TWO:

1. "Strutter" by Kiss. Has to be the version from Kiss Alive!

2. "Toys In The Attic" by Aerosmith. Aerosmith gets plenty of radio play, but not this title cut of a gem.

3. "Highway Star" by Deep Purple. Great keyboard and guitar leads featured in this gem.

4. "Yesterday" by The Beatles...or you could just say Paul McCartney, I suppose. Just accoustic guitar and the voice of one of the greatest vocalists of all time! Slows it down for a quick breather.

5. "For Those About To Rock" by AC-DC. Love the slow guitar intro, and then gets heavy, real quick!

6. "Roller" by April Wine. This song starts out in a great groove...and stays there!

7. "Hotel California" by The Eagles. What a great song...musically and lyrically!

8. "Lay It On The Line" by Triumph. Sending some more love north of the border for our Canadian listeners!

9. "Inside Looking Out" by Grand Funk. From 1970, a longer, jam type song that was ahead of its time...and still sounds good today.

10. "Who Needs Ya?" by Steppenwolf. A lot of people dont know much beyond "Born To Be Wild" by Steppenwolf...or maybe "Magic Carpet Ride". But this tune has great, humurous lyrics, in my opinion, and just a killer sing-a-long chorus. I dare you to ride down the road, behind the wheel of your vehicle, play this, and not sing along!! I couldn't do it!!

11. "Jet Airliner" by Steve Miller Band. Great little riff, and another sing-a-long chorus.

12. "Hey Joe" by Jimi Hendrix. Sure, its rock and roll...but its so full of soul!!

 

Now, if I owned a radio station...I'd damn sure hire me as a DJ!! Yeah c'mon!!

Good stuff. I debated putting some UFO on my playlist. That's sort of my point. Your playlist had familiar bands and you had some regularly heard tunes but also some deep cuts. Your playlist would make me listen more to a classic rock station, not less.

Another station I'd listen to.  Gordon, your station would definitely be more of an "album cut" station, which is always good.  And I agree very much with you on the Lyn. Skyn. song.  Guess what, my 4th song from hour 1 was a Skynyrd tune as well.  And I didn't read anyone's list until I posted mine.

I went with songs that, if I litened to the radio and heard 'em, I would definitely crank up the volume. Some of thse are played on the radio still, but not in heavy rotation, most are not played.

Another "album cuts" station for the most part.  Very nice selection, with my favorite back to back tracks being Queen's Dragon Attack and Joe Walsh's The Confessor.  I can't believe I left Queen off of my list.
