Classic Rock Bottom

NEW (and CLASSIC) VIDEOCORNER#14 - STORM CORROSION, MASTODON, HELIX & GRIM REAPER

Here’s the very first video from Storm Corrosion, for the song Drag Ropes for the band’s debut album.

The 10-minute long video was animated by South African stop-motion animator Jess Cope and is a stunning display of shadow-puppetry that echoes the songs haunting theme, shifting from beautiful to devastating.

“For me, self-indulgence is one of the fundamental things about being an artist,” says Steven Wilson. “Do not make music or art to please other people. If you do, you’ve stopped being an artist and you’ve become an entertainer. This is a very cinematic, impressionistic and immersive record. We just got together and it poured out of us. With this record you’re entering into a very unusual and unfamiliar sonic universe and that’s a very exciting thing to be part of.”

Storm Corrosion is released on Roadrunner Records on May 7.

I can't remember, if I already have posted this video? Nah, I think it was another video from their latest album. By the way, I just saw at the gym, that in a few months, there will be a 2-day "festival" in Copenhagen, called "Copenhell" (sigh), and among the acts are Mastodon, Anthrax, Slayer,Saxon and Marilyn Manson. I probably won't go.

Wild in the Streets was the sixth album by the rock band Helix, released in 1987.
The album went gold in the band's native Canada, but only managed a disappointing #179 on the Billboard 200 in the United States. The band would lose their U.S. deal with Capitol Records soon after.

Rock You to Hell is the third (& final) album released by the British heavy metal band Grim Reaper in 1987. It was released under the RCA label.

STORM CORROSION - 5 danishes

Now that's art!! Both music and video!! Might not be very popular around here?? I will definetly buy the new album.

Again, I must say, I'm totally overwhelmed by the responses

Is this some sort of racism?

Nah, just a lot of stuff to listen/watch. I still have to go thru the cover videos first and then get to this. Be patient!

Patient?? Me??? Are you kidding???

I'm a huge fan of the Helix album Wild In The Streets. Funny story about how I bought the album. I was a sophomore in high school and in a cooking class. The entire culinary arts program got taken to Johnson and Wales University in Rhode Island which is pretty well known for their culinary program. At the end, we got taken to the school store (or whatever it was called). They had a music section and the cassette for the album was there. I still have the cassette although it needs be replaced by a CD.

Also, I loved the Grim Reaper album. I bought it because of the rather gruesome cover art. But I have to say that this band was criminally underappreciated because of their death metal type name. They are a straight ahead metal band and got lost in the mix because of their name. The guitarist, Nick Bowcutt wrote a column for a guitar magazine while vocalist Steven Grimmett went on to from Onslaught for their In Search of Sanity album and now fronts his own The Steven Grimmett Band. This album also featured one of the most unintentionally hilarious songs I've ever heard called "Suck It And See". By the way, their first two albums "See You In Hell" and "Fear No Evil" were pretty good too.

Ok Niels, I'll sample the forbidden fruit!

Storm Corrosion - 5 Danish for the video (4, if you include the vocals)

Great video imagery, I love how they animated it using the silhouette cut outs! The video was dark & foreboding, it had a small village feel to it. The music was eerie & fit the images well. Sadly, it just fell flat for me vocally. I wanted to like it, it had everything going for it. The monotone vocals should have worked in this case, but they left me empty. I kept listening, hoping to hear a vocal change or an increase in the tempo. Hopefully, the rest of the album has more vocal variation.

Dry Bone Valley - 0 Danish

Awful video!!! A constant bombardment of early Atari graphic images!!! The song itself, did nothing for me.

Wild In The Streets - 3 Danish

I Love 80's Hair Bands!!! It's a classic 80's performance video, Yeah!!! What ruins it is the singer, he's just annoying!!! With all the weird comedic faces, he reminds me of the late Kevin Dubrow! I could easily see Dana Carvey, doing a parody of this lead singer! With that being said, the music's not bad.

Rock You To Hell - 4 Danish

I thought, I was the only one, who would like Storm Corrosion. Do you also plan to purchase the album? The vocals are Mikael Åkerfeldt's, as far as I can hear. I think, he has a good voice. I hope that it will be mostly his vocals on the album, instead of Steven Wilson's, but they probably split between them.

And you don't care for Mastodon, huh?

Storm Corrosion has potential, I love music like that! I would like to hear more before I would consider purchasing. As far as Mastedom, it was hard to listen to the song for the crappy video, which actually started out good! That particuliar song wasn't bad, it was just nothing special. Possibly, hearing more could sway me.

You can listen to more from the lastest Mastodon-album right here:

I used your link to listen to more Mastedon. While there were parts I liked & there were other songs that I liked better than the one you featured, it's still not doing it for me. It's just missiung something for me. The sound kept reminding me of "Three Day's Grace" for some reason. The brightside is, I also got to listen to some Jane's addiction on the same playlist! Now, that I like!!!

it somehow cut off my review for Rock You To Hell!

Rock Yo To Hell - 4 Danish

This was my favorite song of the lot! it was hard, the vocals & guitar were very good! Again, 80's hair band, love it!!! The singer was a little scary looking, fortunately they didn't focus on him too much in the video!

Storm Corrosion--5 danii

Porcupine Tree and Opeth together makes for total awesomeness. You can hear dabbles of each band scattered throughout this song, but just dabbles here and there. This is a headphone song from a headphone album. Turn of the lights and listen. Great, great stuff. And I am totally amazed at the video, just watching it I was thinking about how much timewas put into this and for a music video. Great stuff all around.

Mastodon--3 danii

Not my favorite Mastodon album by a long shot (give me "Leviathan" or "Crack The Skye"), but it's ok. This song is pretty good and the video is a step up from "Curl Of The Burl".

Helix--2 danii

I once owned two Helix albums; "Walkin' The Razor's Edge" and "Long Way To Heaven" (which I thought was a great album at least back then) and lost them thru moves, etc. I'm not the biggest Helix fan (hell, I only remember one song of the "Walikin" album), but have a comp which has this song which I believe is enough for me. Song isn't bad, video is typical 80's stuff.

Grim Reaper--3 danii

Like Tageryche I picked this up because of the eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeevil album cover. It's the only GR album I ever picked up, and from what I can remember it sounded like crap. I think they didn't become huge because of this video. The lead singer does not look like your protypical metaol lead singer. He's not pretty enough. And the hairstyle is totally wrong for him. He kinda looks like Meat Loaf. He shouldn't dance. And look for the cameo from Joey Belladonna.
