Classic Rock Bottom

NEW (and CLASSIC) VIDEOCORNER#15 - (SOUNDGARDEN, RIVAL SONS, DEEP PURPLE & AC/DC.

Soundgarden have premiered their music video for their new single “Live To Rise”. DirectorRobert Hales (Nine Inch Nails, Red Hot Chili Peppers) helmed the clip. The song appears on the recently-released soundtrack to the film “The Avengers“.

RIVAL SONS‘ brand new music video for the track “Face Of Light” sees a softer side as they go through the beautiful scenery of the Peak District in the English countryside. The video was filmed with director Dan Ruttley during the band’s recent sold-out UK tour with BLACK STONE CHERRY.

The House of Blue Light is the twelfth studio album by Deep Purple, released in 1987. It is the second recording by the re-formed Mark II lineup.

The album's creation was an exceedingly long and difficult process, and Ritchie Blackmore has said much of it was re-recorded. Ian Gillan has remarked on how strained relations within the band compromised the album: "I look back at House Of Blue Light, there are some good songs on that record, but there’s something missing in the overall album. I can’t feel the spirit of this band. I can see or hear five professionals doing their best, but it’s like a football team, it’s not functioning. It’s like eleven superstars that are playing on the same field but are not connected by the heart or by the spirit". Added organist Jon Lord, "We made the massive mistake of trying to make our music current. We discovered that people didn’t want us to do that."

Highway to Hell was the first AC/DC album not produced by Harry Vanda and George Young. Pre-production of the album began in January 1979 with demos cut at Albert Studios in Sydney, Australia, where they met the intended producer, Eddie Kramer. Kramer was fired before a single track had been completed, and Robert John "Mutt" Lange was brought in to replace him. The change proved to be fortuitous, and the album was the band's biggest yet. Lange would go on to produce the band's next two albums and biggest sellers, Back in Black and For Those About to Rock We Salute You. The album was recorded during sessions in February 1979 at Criteria Studios in Miami, Florida, and March–April at Roundhouse Studios in London, England.

Soundgarden (4 Danishes)

I like this.  It's not as heavy as I expected, but Cornell is such a great vocalist it doesn't matter.  I like the falsetto backing vocals right before the chorus.  I love great guitar solos...this one is pretty good.  The video does nothing for me.

Rival Sons (2 Danishes)

So far I just haven't been able to get into this band, which is a surprise, 'cause I love the retro sound.  They do that well, but I just don't think there songs are that strong.  This one's not bad.  All that being said, I don't remember the vocalist being this good.  He's really good.  Maybe I should have provided more danishes for this.

Deep Purple (4 Danishes)

While I don't think the video is good, it's surprisingly non-cheesy for that time period.  I don't remember this video at all, but the song sounds familiar.  It's a good song, so 4 danishes.

AC/DC (5 Danishes)

Straight forward rock and roll from, in my opinion, the best AC/DC album not named Back In Black.  They are so predictable, but it probably works better for them than any other band.

Soundgarden - (4  Lite Low Cal Danishes)  This really wasn't as heavy, as I would have liked. I didn't get the same feeling, that I get when I hear Linkin' Park, doing the "Transformer" themes. Still, I found myself singing it afterwards. So, the song is catchy & has a hook. There's no doubt, it will be a hit, I just would have liked hearing it a little heavier. The video was great, with all the Avenger's clips!

Rival Sons - (3 Dainishes) I wanted to like this, but something kept holding me back from fully immersing myself into it & I really, can't put a finger on it. I may watch it again & try to figure it out. I liked the video being outside, it was scenic.

Deep Purple - (4 Danishes) - While the video was nothing special, I really liked the song! To be honest, I've never listened to a lot of Deep Purple, but I really like this! I may need to investigate their catalog further.

AC/DC - (5 Danishes) - Straight Forward, Kick Butt AC/DC at it's finest!!!

As always Neils, I appreciate the scraps you throw out for us to feast on!!!

Thank you, Mike, but look closely at my name. I might just start calling you Meki one of these days

I broke the "Golden Rule" of grammar. i before e, except after c!!! Sorry my friend, I will ever be mindful of that slip from here out! To my chagrin, I do get called "Mickey" or "Mikey", more than I would like, but since my recent transformation, everyone has started calling me "Muscle Mike". lol!

SOUNDGARDEN ... 4 reunited Danishes

Yes!!  Now get back in the studio and do a new full length CD!!!  And dont forget the Grecian formula!

RIVAL SONS ... 2 Danish that I dont what to do with

I cant come up with a good reason why this isnt working for me, but its just not.

DEEP PURPLE ... 2 danish with purple glaze

House of Blue Light is one album I dont own, I didnt think it was a very good follow up to Perfect Strangers (which is great!!) - maybe it was rushed, and it kind of still sounds that way.

ACDC ... 5 Fosters! (Thats Australian for Danish)

No words are needed - this is one of my favorites!

Soundgarden--3 danii

Yep, not heavy enough, but allright. Song is kind of forgettable, heard it, now don't really remember it. Video was just a movie tie-in, makes me want to see Avengers...when it's out on Blu-Ray. Guess maybe a few more listens I'll like it more, but giving it 3 sugary substances because it isn't horrible.

Rical Sons--4danii

I like this song, and the video was purty. However, is this band maybe the ugliest band on the planet right now?

Deep Purple--5 danii

This is a kick ass song. Personally, I like this album better than Perfect Strangers which, other than a few songs, I don't remember much of. If you don't have House Of Blue Light, I highly recommend getting it, it might just surprise you. (Yes, I can take requests).

AC/DC--5 danii

Why not?

Now, there's an idea for "my" coming top-5 list: Ugliest bands. Here's one from my top 5-list, Supergrass:

Rolling Stones would runaway with that victory!
