Classic Rock Bottom

So Scott's SHT post on who is in the band now got me to thinking.

Here's a phrase you hear quite often..."I haven't liked ___________ (insert band name) since ____________ (insert musician's name) left the band".

So my questions are, and I'd love to get as many opinions as possible here, is there a band and musician or musician's you feel this way about?

And if so, why?

I wanna know why we can't accept replacements in our favorite bands.  We gladly accept them in our favorite sports teams.  Everybody knows an athlete cannot compete forever.  So when Dan Marino retired, did you start saying that you no longer like the Dolphins since he left?  Probably not.  Most people are life long fans of their respective sports teams.  Why can't we be like this with our favorite bands?

Gotta agree with you on that...  I actually like Learning to Fly a lot, while the Division Bell was pretty boring

This is kind of along what you are asking, in I couldn't quite accept the Crue album with John Corabi as a Motley Crue album. I LOVED the album but thought they should have went under a different name.

Generally, for me it is the lead singer departing that does it for me. With exception to Deep Purple with Coverdale. Those were a couple GREAT albums.

I definitely have no use for the current KISS line up either. It reminds me of when Bo and Luke Duke weren't on the Dukes of Hazard for that one season. It's just not the same.

Alice in Chains, again with their lead singer, just isn't AIC anymore. They are doing some great stuff that I do enjoy with this new guy but for some bands it really is the vox that to me define a band and set them apart.

There are the exceptions though for sure. Black Sabbath with Dio was just a perfect fit. Now don't get me wrong. That line up did not compare to the Ozzy years, but they did come come pretty damn close.

The last few years we had Thin Lizzy touring. Without Lynott???? are you serious? well I guess they were, but at least now they have finally called that quits and although they plan on doing an album, they have respected the name Thin Lizzy and will be going by another name.

I think Audioslave did it right when Cornell joined up with the Rage gang.

I could go on and on about other bands where it was someone else other than the lead singer. Motorhead, or Humble Pie where there are certain eras or line ups that I prefer over others, but really, for me to outright abandon a band it is when the lead singer changes. Except for when Van Halen had Gary Cherone. That was the best lead singer EVER for that band!

Interesting point about the Duke boys.  That makes me think of when Red Foxx wasn't on Sanford And Son for at least a season.  He was "in St. Louis" visiting relatives if I remember correctly.  And although I really liked Grady, it wasn't the same without Fred G. Sanford.

I hope you are kidding about Cherone and Van Halen. He might have been the best singer, but that album? Not good at all. I like Gary Cherone, don't get me wrong, but Cherone and VH was not a good idea. Should have went with Patty Smyth!

I gotta agree with Jon on this one. I love Extreme...one of my favorite bands of all time. But that one album he did with VH, even though there are a couple of good tunes, was just really, ummm....extremely disappointing. Lousy production, as well.

I am DEFINITELY joking about Cherone. Hell man, Diamond Dave is the only man to be up front of that band. Come on. hahahaha

Whew. You scared me.
