Classic Rock Bottom

So Scott's SHT post on who is in the band now got me to thinking.

Here's a phrase you hear quite often..."I haven't liked ___________ (insert band name) since ____________ (insert musician's name) left the band".

So my questions are, and I'd love to get as many opinions as possible here, is there a band and musician or musician's you feel this way about?

And if so, why?

I wanna know why we can't accept replacements in our favorite bands.  We gladly accept them in our favorite sports teams.  Everybody knows an athlete cannot compete forever.  So when Dan Marino retired, did you start saying that you no longer like the Dolphins since he left?  Probably not.  Most people are life long fans of their respective sports teams.  Why can't we be like this with our favorite bands?

The only replacements I'll likely never accept would be for Paul or Gene.  Like you said concerning the Beatles, they are my favorites.  The only guitarist before Thayer that I didn't really like was St. John, but he never got much of a chance.  I don't dislike Thayer.  But the chemistry is not there with him.  To me, they got it right with Kulick as Ace's replacement, then shot themselves in the foot with the reunion.

But most other bands I think I'd at least be able to give a chance.  Heck, with Tate out of Queensryche we get two bands full of replacements.  Maybe the music will profit from that.

How about REO Speedwagon without Gary Richrath?

I think they miss his songwriting the most, he wrote some great tunes!  And his playing was real high quality and unique.  Not sure what happened to him since then, but he's been sorely missed!

Definitely! Good call on Richrath. And what about Foghat? Only the drummer is the same now. But the musicians "hold on" to these old band names, because it helps them make money, instead of starting all over with a new band name, and hoping you can record and/or tour.

I think Foghat really had no choice though....

I mean, look at, oh......Rose Tattoo.

"Choice" is a bad word. I believe the drummer is from the original lineup, why not keep the name alive? It'll cause some bucks to roll in, etc.

hell with it, I have no idea what I'm trying to say. Scott's got me rattled.

And let me through another one out there...

I cant accept Styx without Dennis DeYoung.  I think I've made myself perfectly clear on where I stand with Gowan in the band...

Crystal.

Odd...Styx is so much better now. I don't understand why Scott can't accept this?

you keep saying that but Im not sure if your being serious or just antagonist...  In no other world can I imagine anyone liking a DeYoung-less Styx with,  in his place, a fool who makes a mockery of the role he played in the band...

Cyclorama=the greatest Styx album EVER.

Wait, I got one.

Pink Floyd without Roger Waters just wasn't the same. Love David Gilmour, but the two Waters-less albums weren't that great. Listenable to a point, but ultimately pretty boring.
