Classic Rock Bottom

After 1985's "Standing On The Edge" I gave up on Cheap Trick. The next three albums absolutely sucked and I basically forgot about them.

Then, around 1994-95, I was in a record store and checking out the cutout bin. IN there was a cassette from a band called Cheap Trick, but it didn't have the normal Cheap Trick logo. Kinda looked like they were going for a new look, a rebirth I guess you could say. The new logo looked messy, made me think they were going back to basics, maybe putting the previous 9 or so years behind them. Or something like that.

With an awesome price of .99, I went ahead and plunked down my hard earned cash and the cassette was MINE!. Hell, it was cheap and if it sucked, it sucked. No big deal.

Surprise, surprise. This wasn't the "Lap Of Luxury" or "Busted" Cheap Trick. This was the Cheap Trick who ROCKED. When that first song started, I was impressed. Cheap Trick were back!

This album did not leave the car for months. I listened to this puppy over and over again, it was/is so damned good. And everytime I listened to it, it was like I heard a new song everytime, something I thought I hadn't heard before. Even the "weird" song is cool ("Ride The Pony").

The followup ("Cheap Trick") was, IMHO, even better than "Woke Up With A Monster" and that one turned up in cutout bins very quickly as well. Never got it, why was everyone so turned off by Cheap Trick during this time period?

Oh well, they're missing out on some really good music but you don't have to because you can listen to it HERE.

MSoTW: Niels correctly guessed Tygers Of Pan Tang last week. This week I'm kind of taking a page out of Scott's book and picked a mellow song. That makes me cry. Like a little girl.

Big Cheap Trick fan here.

But I am a big fan of Standing on the Edge.
I should clarify...I love "Standing On The Edge", it's the next three albums that sucked.
I couldn't figure out what TageRyche meant until I read your reply...now I get it. For the record, I love Standing On The Edge as well. I bought Woke Up With A Monster sometime within the last year or so, and I remember thinking it sounded pretty decent. I'm looking forward to listening to this so I can refresh my memory. I specifically remember liking the title track.
Okay, guess I mis-read what you had written.

Oh, and I liked Woke Up as well.

But then again, I've never really hated any album they've done.
"Standing on the edge" is a great album. The title-song is one of my favorite CT-songs.

I bought the album (Woke up with a monster), when it was released, but I did'nt really like it. I did'nt like the following album too. I guess I was a bit tired of CT at that moment.

I don't think CT has to rock, to make a good album. There's two GREAT songs on "Lap of luxury", namely "All we need is a dream" and "Ghost town".

A sidenote: If you buy the new CLASSIC ROCK MAGAZINE you'll get the newest CT-album "for free", well in Europe that is, I don't know about US? There's some good songs on that album too.

I don't think, I've heard MSoTW before, but it's DEFINETLY not a NWOBHM-band!!!!!!
That's a negatory on the CT CD in the U.S. As usual, they substitute a CD with a bunch of no-name bands in the U.S. I've been meaning to ask you Niels if you got that. Have you seen the Classic Rock Presents AOR magazine yet?
No, I have'nt seen it. I've seen a commercial for it, but I have'nt really been looking for it.

Is it the new edition you've got, the one with "The Who - Live at Leeds"-frontpage?

Because the last editon, with Keith Moon on the cover, was with a cd with "no-names bands".
No, I have the one with K. Moon. It takes a while for the current issue to reach bookstores over here. But I have read on the website that "The Latest" will not be shipped with the U.S. magazines.
I listened last night and I do think this is a pretty good album. For the most part, I agree with Jon on the songs that he put an asterisk by, but in my opinion, he left one off. That would be "Tell Me Everything". That's a great power pop song that sounds like it should have been a hit.

Great pick Jon.
No idea on the MSOTW. Kinda sounds like one of those Celtic women songs, but what do I know...

I seen this CT in bargain bin before as well. Why I don't pick them up is a mystery to me.

I liked this one though, not a bad listen, not "go out an buy" great, but a nice listen.
Nah, not Celtic woman/women.
So, I'm starting to get a Super-Hero complex, with my ample lyrical searching skills, I am able to track and find artists few have heard of. Thinking I might call myself "Mystery Artist Search Man"... ok nevermind...

But I did manage to find and confirm the MSOTW for this one. And I must say, I had no idea who she was, although her former bands name was familiar, I know nothing of their work. Furthermore I had no idea who she became as a solo artist. All that to say I would have never guessed this in a million years.

But now I know and will await the skillful replies of those who surely know more...
