Jon Oliva's Pain - Festival (April 2010)

Seems like every year we get a new Pain album, but it's been a couple years since the last one. Effectively filling in for the absence of any new Savatage output, Jon keeps putting out fine albums and I keep buying them.

 

 

Steve Miller Band - Bingo! (June 2010)

 

 

1. Hey Yeah

2. Don't Cha Know

3. Rock Me Baby

5. Come On (Let The Good Times Roll)

 

His first studio album in 17 years, I kind of wish it was original material, but this is pretty darn good. A cover album of old blues songs, I never really paid attention to how good a geetarist Steve is. Also have a cameo from Joe Satriani on "Rock Me Baby".

 

 

Van Canto - Tribe Of Force (March 2010)

 

 

1. Lost Forever

2. I Am Human

3. My Voice

4. Water Fire Heaven Earth

5. Master Of Puppets

 

You'll either like this or hate it. I liked it when I first listened to it, now am not too sure. It's a cappella power metal (with a drummer), so listen at your own risk. Interesting cover of Metallica's "Master Of Puppets", makes me crack up for some reason.

Enjoyed your first 2 choices. My first thought when I heard the Van Canto was it would make for an interesting episode of Glee.

I may have to pick up that Steve Miller, I listened to it once before and it didnt click, but these tracks you picked make me want to give it a closer listen.

Not a Gleek! Actually never even seen an episode and plan to keep it that way, it was my first thought when I heard the Van stuff though...

I've now listened to the all of the albums, and, believe it or not, I like them all. Even Van Canto. I especially liked track 2 and the cover of Master Of Puppets. I really think that style of music is very hit and miss with me, and I'd say Van Canto is a hit.

Steve Miller was pretty good. It went by pretty quick.

Jon Oliva's Pain is good as well. C'mon Jon, is this really you? But seriously, my next question is simple if not silly, but what is the actual name of the band? Is it Pain, fronted by Jon Oliva? That would be sort of like Duff McKagan's Loaded. Or is it Jon Oliva's Pain? I'm guessing the latter, but I have actually wanted this to be clarified for my personal knowledge for quite a while. Sorry to sound so uneducated.

Overall, great post Jon. I always thought I liked a wide range of music, but your range tops mine quite easily.

Jon Oliva's Pain is the name (kind of a play on words).

And I am VERY surprised you liked Van Canto, I remember posting a song or video on the other site and you didn't like it too much? I think you have to be in the right frame of mind to enjoy it.

I've spent enough times beating my head against the wall in my lifetime, I don't plan on doing it just to convert you over to the best band ever.

I really don't recall the posts on the other site, was it the same album? Anyway, I just liked the fact that although it was that operatic/classical rock sound, it wasn't overwhelming. Tracks 2 and 5 were really good.

The band was originally going to be called Taj Mahal or Tage Mahal, but there was a band in Europe that had the name already. That's how the name became JOP and the first album Tage Mahal.
