Classic Rock Bottom

Its time to turn the Hidden Treasure list up to 11, yup, its a Spinal Tap insprired edition this week.  Were going to look at 70's and 80's Arena rock bands and/or those who were very active in that time period.

The best analogy for this weeks list, and this forum in general, is best left said by Derek Smalls (with some very minor embellishments by me) ... "We're very lucky on this site in that we have three visionaries, RJHog, Jon, and Niels, they're like poets, like Shelley, Byron, and some other poet. They're three distinct types of visionaries, like earth, wind and fire, basically. I feel my role on this site is to be somewhere in the middle of that, kind of like lukewarm water."

It's such a fine line between stupid, and clever...

...START...

Title: I Was One
Band: The Babys
Album: Head First
Year: 1978

It would'nt be a hidden treasure if I posted tracks most people know.  This album has some hits on it, the title track being one.  But when I thought of this idea, I really wanted to lead off with a great opening act and the track Head First came to mind as being a great anthem for an Arena act, and it is.  But looking deeper into the tracks on the album, 'I Was One' is a really solid cut.  Nice beat, great rhythm guitar and John Waites vocals are always on point.

Title: Jailbait
Band: Legs Diamond
Album: A Diamond Is A Hard Rock
Year: 1977

The album title sounds like a spinal tap quote.  This is another band that almost broke it in America but not quite, so a real solid opening act.  The bands imagery is really cool, great album covers, suspenders, leather, big hair, you know, all the required attirbutes to look great on stage.  But they also had some real chops and some catchy tunes.  This is one.

Title: Can You Hear The Wind Blow
Band: Whitesnake
Album: Good To Be Bad
Year: 2008

I first seen Whitesnake opening up for Quiet Riot in 82-83 (hard to remember some of those days).  Slide It In had just barely came out, and they blew them off the stage.  This track is a real hot track for them off a real good release in Good To Be Bad.

Title: Fight The Good Fight
Band: Triumph
Album: Allied Forces
Year: 1981

(Taken off the CD titled Greatest Hits Remixed)
Huge productions were the norm for Arena bands, and Triumph was at the top of the Arena game.  This track just knocks it out of ballpark.  Rik Emmett is at his best singing, writing and playing.  (I wonder if another Canadian trio will make an appearance on this list.  hmmmm)

Title: Let It Go
Band: Def Leppard
Album: High 'N Dry
Year: 1980

Gotta have some Mutt Lange produced stuff on here.  And High 'N Dry is my personal favorite Def Leppard.

Title: Livin' For You
Band: Boston
Album: Walk On
Year: 1994

Every good Arena rock band had to have a ballad and while Boston had bigger hits and other ballads, this is a personal favorite for me.  I can hear how good this would sound live.

Title: The Seventh Seal
Band: Van Halen
Album: Balance
Year: 1995

OK, time for the encores, the big Arena rock bands.  I love this lead off track from Balance.  I thought this was the best of the Van Hagar era, little did we know it would be the last as well.  So when I dwell on encores the opening of this one sets the stage (pun intended) quite well.

Title: Its A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock 'n' Roll)
Band: ACDC
Album: High VOltage
Year: 1976

2 chords and bagpipes, what else do we need?

Title: Outer Space
Band: Ace Frehley
Album: Anomaly
Year: 2009

I really wanted to put a KISS song here, but I really wanted to feature an Ace track because I think that would play over really well.  So Im putting this track here for that reason and two others, 1) its a proxy for a KISS track and 2) it rocks.

Title: Secret Touch
Band: Ruch
Album: Vapor Trails
Year: 2002

To me Rush is the best live act from a musicality perspective, three of the most talented players anywhere.  They have great video back drops, state of the art light shows, and stage presence as well.  Top that off with one of the most extensive catalogs in rock and roll and you never get the same show twice.  Vapor Trails is a real cool return to heavier guitar rock for them, the whole album is full of hidden gems, so I picked this one to close my Arena Band tour.

...END...

Well, I don't really think that the end can be assessed as of itself as being the end because what does the end feel like? It's like saying when you try to extrapolate the end of the universe, you say, if the universe is indeed infinite, then how - what does that mean? How far is all the way, and then if it stops, what's stopping it, and what's behind what's stopping it? So, what's the end, you know, is my question to you.   -  David St. Hubbins

First of all, in answering your question what's the end, I think it's a Burt Reynolds movie. This is a nice looking playlist, and you definitely can't be a bad guy 'cause you included an Ace Frehley tune (I think anything from his 78 solo album or the song Hard Times from Dynasty would have fit well here as well).

And hey, I didn't know I was a visionary...that's so cool.

I have to sign in under the wife's name to listen, because ning added a new feature that lets me edit everyone's replies. Therefore, everytime I try to click play, it goes to the edit feature. I haven't figured out a fix.
I like this playlist, being a visionary and all....
Another good playlist, Scott. If you had a radioshow, I would listen most of the time!

I had never heard that Baby's-song but I like it very much. Legs Diamond sounded a BIT like Judas Priest.
It's a long time since I've heard any Triumph, but it's a very good song. And then you had one of my favorite Def Leppard-songs and my favorite AC/DC-song!

I saw Whitesnake in january ´83, and Ozzy was supporting, totally bald!!
Which one was bald? Coverdale or Ozzy?

Although I'm not Scott, I want to reply to the mention of a radio show. Just as a heads up, I'm planning a Classic Rock Bottom Radio Show/Podcast sometime in the future. I don't have the setup yet, but I'd like to get it up and running maybe next year some time. I want to have the setup so that I can get special guests (like Scott, Niels, Jon and any other Bottom Feeder that wants to participate) call in on the telephone. Anyway, it's just an idea I've been toying around with. Any thoughts from anybody?
Ha ha, no It WAS Ozzy that was completely bald. When he entered the stage, I thought "Who the H... is that?" until he started to sing and move, like only Ozzy does.

That sounds very interesting, RJhog. Only thing is, I think it's VERY expensive to call in from Denmark, but I know, we'll find a soloution to that minor "problem".
Interesting thought.... never gave much thought, well, really any thought to radio.
I want to do a simple show, sort of like Mike Pell's broadcast. The difference will be that this will be inhouse only, not published or anything like that. I don't want to deal with royalties and such. Just something for the Bottom Feeders.
Nice...can I trash Kiss?
No but you can Kiss my Trash...

Hey, that one was pretty good.
ehhh...ok. I guess.
You need a podcast to trash Kiss? You can't just do that on the boards?
