Classic Rock Bottom

NEW MUSIC CORNER #17 (BACHMAN & TURNER/INGRAM HILL/APOCALYPTICA/DEFTONES)

by RJhog

For this edition of NMC I have 4 picks for you. I have selected a classic band (sort of), a new band, something from the grab bag and a bonus. Aren't you lucky. Anyway, maybe you'll
find something here that you like. Out of these 4, I like one of them a
lot, two of them are okay, and 1 does absolutely nothing for me. I'll
chime in with my opinions after a couple of other folks have listened
and commented.

Classic Band (Sort Of)

Bachman & Turner - Bachman & Turner (September 2010)
1. Rollin' Along

2. That's What It Is

3. Moonlight Rider

4. Slave To The Rhythm

5. Traffic Jam

Bachman-Turner Overdrive is a Canadian rock band. The band was known for it's 70's work including the hits "Ain't Seen Nothin' Yet" and Takin' Care Of Business. Randy Bachman
& Fred Turner (it seems as though Overdrive is in a legal argument
with these two over use of the original name) are two of the original
BTO members who now perform together under the name Bachman &
Turner. This would be their self-titled new album.

New Band

Ingram Hill - Look Your Best (September 2010)

6. Lady Grey

7. Burn Out Your Flame

8. Miss Kennedy

9. The Hardest Part

10. Ready For The Sun

Ingram Hill is an American band from Memphis Tennessee. They have been kicking around since about 2000 and have released 3 full length albums and a couple of EP's. Look Your Best
is their latest release. It features outstanding vocals and is driven by
the acoustic guitar.

Grab Bag

Apocalyptica - 7Th Symphony (August 2010)

11. 2010 (feat. Dave Lombardo of Slayer on drums)

12. Not Strong Enough (feat. B Smith/Shinedown)

13. Through Paris In A Sportscar

14. Broken Pieces (feat. Lacey Mosley of Flyleaf)

15. On The Rooftop With Quasimodo

Apocalyptica is a Finnish cello metal band from Helsinki. They formed in 1993. The band consists only of 3 classically trained cellists and a drummer.
That's it. They traditionally do instrumentals for each album and have
guests vocalists on 4 tunes. I've given you 2 tunes with vocals and 3
instrumentals.

Bonus

Deftones - Diamond Eyes (May 2010)

16. Royal

17. CMND/CTRL

18. Beauty School

19. Sextape

20. Risk

Deftones is an American rock band from Sacramento, California, formed in
1988. They are sort of an alternative metal band, somewhat similar to
Breaking Benjamin and Chevelle. Diamond Eyes is there latest release. I
included this as a bonus because a couple of folks commented that they
at least somewhat liked the song featured in Niels latest VOTW post. I
didn't include it (since it's already posted elswhere), but click here to refresh your memory.

BACHMAN AND TURNER... (Thumbs 45 degrees up)
I love the BTO feel, almost a reunion but not quite. I like the tracks you picked, they are quite strong, but its what you didn't post that is keeping me from a purchase, I have this downloaded using my Zune subscription, so I will go back and give it a fresh listen, but as of right now its 50/50

INGRAM HILL... (Thumbs Even)I definitely hear a country influence, I'm not a big country music fan, but I'll give them a pass on that since they are from Tennessee and I cant see how you wouldn't have that influence being from there. I also hear a 90's Counting Crows/Gin Blossoms type of thing going on as well. This is pretty good, but memorable.

APOCALYPTICA... (Thumbs Down)
Cello Metal? Never heard those two words in the same sentence, ever. Look, its not bad, its just not stylistically my cup of tea. I recently posted a song by REO titled Breakaway, in it is the following lyric. "Some songs have no meaning, and some songs try to hard, try to say it all, and end up saying nothing". That's what comes to mind here

DEFTONES... (Thumbs Down)
hmmmm, I'm flashing back to Niels video of the week. Monotone-ish and not very interesting.

Bachman and Turner end up the big winners of this NMC in my view!
Bachman And Turner--**
Not bad, but not something I am itching to buy. Did really like songs #2 and #5. Love the jazziness to those songs, but it seems the others they were just trying.

Ingram Hill--0*
I hear Ingram Hill and think Windham Hill. Vocalist sounds like a billion other's out there nowadays, music was making me sleepy. i walked away and came back a couple minutes later and a different song was playing and I didn't even notice. Or care.

Apocalyptica--***
As you know, I like the mixture of classical and rock. Almost picked this up when it came out but held back because I have so much other stuff to listen to. It's on my list to buy, especially having heard these tracks. The NMC works!

Deftones--**
Not too bad, but not a purchase. Did like the last three songs, the first two sounded alike.
Bachman and Turner (Thumbs allmost up)

The first song is very good, but the rest are not as good, but overall it sounds okay.

Ingram Hill (Thumbs up)

This surprised me, because I did'nt really like the first song, but the rest of the songs were VERY good. I also hear the Country-influence, but it don't bother me. Some Country-music is not bad at all. I like this one!!

Apocalyptica (Thumbs allmost down)

I don't really like this, but "Not strong enough" and "Broken Pieces" are not that bad. (I've got a video lined up by this band for VOTW. Maybe I'll use it, maybe I won't. It's not one of these songs.)

Deftones (Thumbs down)

This also surprise me, but in a negativ way. I kinda like the song/video in VTOW, but this I don't like, It's very booring, like the only Deftones-album I ever bought, "White Pony". I just don't like it.

The only one I would consider buying, is Ingram Hill.
Bachman & Turner (Thumbs sideways)

I had high hopes for this. Although it's not bad, it was a bit disappointing. I agree with Scott's statements that these are definitely the best 5 songs from the album. I don't have a lot of BTO, but I really love BTO II, which will probably see the light of day soon in the AOTW feature.

Ingram Hill (Thumbs up)

I really, really like this. I like the acoustic based sound, and they remind me of Sister Hazel (who also has a new album out which will be on my next NMC). I think their songwriting is very good. It's funny Niels, I wasn't sure whether to put the first track up or something else, and you mentioned you didn't like it. Oh well.

Apocalyptica (Thumbs sideways)

I don't love it, don't hate it. I think it's amazing that the music is from 3 cellos and drums. I swear I hear some guitars in there. I like the two songs with vocals a good bit. I didn't include the song that I think Niels alluded to because I could have sworn he had already put it in VOTW. I had my text referring to it ready to go, then realized Niels had not yet used it. It's a shame, cause that's a pretty good song too.

Deftones (Thumbs Down)

I really don't like this. It's so flat with no melody at all. The sound is like Breaking Benjamin, but I happen to like BB. The first two songs sound like crap. The last 3 I can at least deal with, even though they aren't particularly good. This will be my last Deftones CD (most likely).
That's weird!!! You did'nt use the Apocalyptica-song, because you thought I had used it in VOTW, but I was (am?) going to use it next week???!!!!

Spooky!! It sure is Halloween!!!! (Well, allmost)
