NEW MUSIC CORNER #21 (BLACK LABEL SOCIETY/DISTURBED/BLACK WATER RISING/STONE SOUR)

by RJhog

Although most folks have a long weekend in observance of Thanksgiving, I actually have to work on Friday and on Saturday morning, so I thought I'd throw this up a day early.  That just give you guys extra time to digest it.  This week I have 4 new or current bands to offer.  I originally planned on putting up the first 3, but Niels asked if I had the fourth one, which I did, so I decided to add it as a bonus.  I hope you enjoy these, but if you don't, at least you know not to throw down your hard earned cash in exchange for them.

Black Label Society (Order Of The Black - 2010)

1. Overlord

2. Black Sunday

3. Time Waits For No One

4. Godspeed Hellbound

5. Chupacabra

Most of you, I'm sure, are familiar with Black Label Society.  This band is the creation of guitar whiz Zakk Wylde.  You get heavy, guitar driven rock with an occasional ballad.

Disturbed (Asylum - 2010)

6. The Infection

7. Another Way To Die

8. Never Again

9. Crucified

10. ISHFWILF

Disturbed is an American "heavy metal" band.  This is their 5th album.  It's more guitar driven rock with distinct vocals from David Draiman.  In case you are wondering, that last track is a cover, with the letters representing a famous song.  It's a hidden track on the CD.

Black Water Rising (Black Water Rising - 2010)

11. The Mirror

12. Brother Go On

13. Hate Machine

14. Blessed

15. No Halos

Black Water Rising is the debut effort from the band of the same name.  I don't know anything about this band, I just decided to take a chance on this one.  You get guitar driven hard rock with some decent hooks.  This band shows some good potential.

Stone Sour (Audio Secrecy - 2010)

16. Mission Statement

17. Digital (Did You Tell)

18. Unfinished

19. Miracles

20. Imperfect

Stone Sour is the side band for Slipknot vocalist Corey Taylor.  It's heavy rock, with some occasional screaming (thankfully, not too much in these songs).  This is the band's 3rd album.

BLACK LABEL SOCIETY... (Thumbs down)
I have no expectation going into this one. I'm not a real fan of the band, so... I liked the opener Overlord well enough though Black Sunday, Time Waits For No One, nor Godspeed Hellbound (what is that anyway?) couldn't maintain my interest in listening. I did like the acoustic closer. No real interest in purchasing this one.

DISTURBED... (Thumbs even, though I tried move them up slightly)
I like what I'm hearing, although something is missing and I can't quite put my finger on it. I'm feeling like this is close to being really good, yet still too middle of the road. Too much like other bands. It's blending together into one long song. Why doesn't the last track start playing until 1:35? Only to find it to be a U2 remake, hmmm....

BLACK WATER RISING... (Thumbs even)
So if Black Label Society and Disturbed had a baby, Black Water Rising is what I would hear. I liked the opening riffs of all the songs, they've got a funky swagger to them, but they don't hold up as they play on, the songs seem to run on.

STONE SOUR... (Thumbs slightly up)
This seems like it was posted before and got very favorable comments from most. Stylistically all four albums mesh together in a too similar way, but if I was to pull Stone Sour aside and listen to it first, I think it would sound OK. Miracles and Imperfect are very nice tracks. As a whole I probably would not purchase, but for me this is "by far" the best of the 4.

Nice Post RJ!
Wow, that was heavy music!

Black Label Society - Thumbs even

"Overlord" is a good number, but I don't really like either his singing voice or the sound of his guitar. You could really imagine Ozzy singing "Time waits for no one". "Chucabraca" sounds too much like Eddie Van Halen!!

Disturbed - Thumbs up.

I like this one, I don't think, I'm going to purchase it, but I like it. Especially the first 3 numbers. They remind me of Metallica.

Black Water Rising - Thumbs slightly up

At first, I did'nt really like this, but it sort of "grew on me". "Blessed" is a good track. They sound a BIT like King's X, sometimes.

Stone Sour - Thumbs slightly down

Nah, not really me. I like "Miracles", though. That's a good number. Probably the best in this week's NMC!!
Black Label Society---(Thumbs Up)
Like Zakk's geetar playing, like his singing. Even like the ballads. Really good album, I have it on a list of stuff to buy, listening to these didn't change my mind.

Disturbed---(Thumbs 3/4 Up)
Only have purchased their debut and didn't bother picking up anythng else when it was released. This isn't bad at all, but I'm not sure if I would purchase. Could have done without the cover though.....

Black Water Rising---(Thumbs Up)
Really like this, possible purchase. I hear where Niel's is coming from on the King's X vibe.

Stone Sour---(Thumbs Up)
As with disturbed, only picked up their debut. I like this too, might pick it up if there's nothing else around and I'm on a buying frenzy. And it's cheap.

4 solid picks from Rjhog!
I guess this just proves that miracles happen every day...I got 3&3/4 thumbs up from Jon. I'm amazed!

But seriously, Jon, did you like Disturbed's debut. I think it's very good, way above anything else by them.

Also, what did you think of Stone Sour's debut? I liked it okay, but liked their second album better. Just curious.
For it's time, Disturbed's debut was ok. I actually haven't listened to it much since picking it up. But it's ok. From what I remember of the debut, I kind of like this one better, so will have to give the first one a spin, see how I feel about it now.

I did not like Stone Sour's debut when first heard it. Then I listened to it again about a year later and discovered stuff I hadn't heard the first time and this time liked it. It's another one of those albums I haven't listened to for a long time, should also give that a spin and see how I feel about it now.

Just wait till I post NMC...can almost guarantee 2/3 will get thumbs down.
