Classic Rock Bottom

Journey's first album was released on April 1, 1975.  This was not your Grandaddy's Journey. Actually, this was your Grandaddy's Journey.  The album is pretty much straight up prog.  Or jazz fusion, or something like that.  It's certainly not the Steve Perry fronted popular Journey.  But Neal Schon was there, along with Gregg Rolie, Ansley Dunbar, Ross Valory and George Tickner (he was a rhythm guitarist, in case you've never heard of him).

But if you didn't know there was a Journey before Steve Perry came along, I don't think this discovery is gonna do much for you.  Don't get me wrong, the musicianship is fantastic.  Those guys could play.  There is some aggressive guitar on display.  But the most interesting songs to me are the instrumentals, Kohoutek and Topaz.  The best vocalized song is In My Lonely Feeling/Conversation.  Are you familiar with this one?

I totally forgot to add that musically, this reminds me of Steven Wilson's solo stuff in places.
