Classic Rock Bottom

This 4-part series may seem surprising- acoustic, a folk act, and from the 50’s & early 60’s!
But the Kingston Trio made their mark, I am a folkie and I get to pick, lol!
I will be taking an extensive look at the Trio, and delving deeply.
If I didn’t think you would enjoy it, I wouldn’t bother putting it up here.
And there is some interesting history connected to them.
Did you know that at the very first Grammys, they won one for Best Country & Western Song- there was no Folk category!
Wonder what Johnny Cash was doing that year?
While immensely popular with the public, they were villified by the folk purists because they dared to sing new songs, not just 200 year old ones!
At one point, they had 4 of the Top 10 albums on the charts.
So join me, as I play a certain song that was on our Summer Cruise, but this time with the old, calypso wording.
An African song, with a translation at the beginning, that became a huge hit by another group after they rocked it up..
And a Woody Guthrie song that sounds so different to hear by somebody other than the Weavers.
We’re just getting started!

Here's the first link of what will be one more than a trio, at WLSO.FM:

RJ,
That Billboard page is amazing.
Nice work on your part.
Maybe it is Michael Jackson.
But I don't remember him having 4 albums out at the same time!
And it says this:

In 2009 Jackson became the first artist in history to have four of the top 20 best selling albums in a single year in the United States

Why would it say Top 20 and not Top 10 if that were the case?

I found these 2 statements on Wikipedia:

The Kingston Trio:

Four of the group's LPs charted among the Top 10 selling albums for five weeks in November and December 1959,[3] a record unmatched for more than 50 years,[4] and the group still ranks after half a century in the all-time lists of many of Billboard's cumulative charts, including those for most weeks with a number 1 album, most total weeks charting an album, most number 1 albums, most consecutive number 1 albums, and most top ten albums.

Michael Jackson:

In 2009 Jackson became the first artist in history to have four of the top 20 best selling albums in a single year in the United States

Although those aren't exactly the same, I would imagine he might be the artist, if in fact the feat was ever matched.  I also found in Wikipedia a statement that says The Kingston Trio is the only artist to simultaneously have 4 albums in the Top 10 of Billboard's chart.

Jon,
Working it at work, I love it, and do that too, lol!
Glad you enjoyed it, and although the younger people may not remember them very well, the Kingston Trio deserve to be brought to their attention.
You thought some of those songs were violent?
Odd, but I guess you have a point, although that was a far less violent time than today.
I am sure the Smothers Brothers would have done Tom Dooley.
Sorry about this:

Ok, I'm stumped...who had four top ten albums 40 years after the Kingston Trio?

That show is 3 years old, but I may still have remembered.
However I don't think I knew even doing the show!
That's why I was joking about it with Engineer Ken.
Sorry, but I don't know the answer...and I wonder why I didn't bother to look it up...then or now, lol?
Probably because I didn't pre-read what I was going recite, I had a tendency to do that!
I was far more interested in the music than the text.
Thanks for writing and listening, if you find the answer...TELL ME, LOL,
Mike

I really enjoyed this, finally was able to get this to work at, well, work. Noticed that some of those songs were pretty violent? Folks songs, huh?

"Tom Dooley" I remember from the Smothers Brothers, if my memory is correct. The rest, even though they might be a bit "countryish" were highly listenable.

Ok, I'm stumped...who had four top ten albums 40 years after the Kingston Trio? I am completely foggy on this, for some reason I think Madonna but that can't be right....

After you grimace through the Kingston Trio, lol!
Here's a hint, it will be on November 1st.

Cool...when does that one start?

That's good to hear my man!

Oh, and I think I have decided after all the years of doing a Halloween show, I will not do one this year.

Instead I will do a sort of ANTI-Halloween show, LOL!

And you'll learn why.

Nice.  I will look forward to that show.  And yes, I'll keep listening to the Trio.

RJ,
Well, you can either hang in there or take a few weeks off, lol!
Hey it's folk music...ageless.
And I will be playing other artists WITHIN this series.
About time you heard Tom Dooley in it's entirety, lol!
Glad you caught that line about the "harder" song, I had forgotten I said it.
I tell you, I have a GREAT idea for a show, more than one actually, and I have written down very many of the songs I would use, and it will blow your mind.
The SAME songs...Acoustic VS. Electric!
There will be surprises in there.
I'll get to it someday.
Meanwhile...ah listen to the Kingston Trio...they are short episodes, lol!
