What's The 4-1-1?
Here is a brand new compilation focusing on the rather underplayed side of the songwriting of Warren Zevon, his love songs. This album offers up 12 tracks plus a bonus song in the form of a solo Zevon performing "Don't Let Us Get Sick".
Genre
Rock / Classic Rock / Singer-Songwriter
The Good
Hey it's another release from Warren Zevon. A compilation it may be but that doesn't matter to me. The majority of the songs are from the last three studio albums Zevon released with Artemis Records. Three of his earlier songs are featured as well including the song that serves as the title of the collection. The other two songs are "Accidentally Like A Martyr" and "Tenderness on the Block".
The liner notes feature twonotes extolling the virtues of Warren Zevon including one from his daughter Ariel. I really enjoyed the version of "Don't Let Us Get Sick" that serves at the bonus cut for the album.
The Bad
Whether as a fan or a critic, there is nothing bad to say about this album, unless you aren't crazy about multiple compilations of previously released material.
The Verdict
Warren Zevon has long been acknowledged as one of the kings of witty cynicism and sardonic dark humor in his songs. Long time fans have no problem seeing his softer side but for those that are newcomers to the Zevon catalog, this will be a nice alternate look at one of music's best songwriters.
Did You Know?
The harmonies on the song "Tenderness On The Block" are credited to the Gentleman Boys. They are made up of Jackson Brown, Jorge Calderon, Kenny Edwards, John David Souther and Waddy Wachtel.
