I've been walking through the heavier side of my collection this week and I am noticing a big deficiency. One of the coolest things about doing this list each week is that I am learning more about my musical tastes than I thought I would. At my age I should be well established in what I like, and I am for the most part. It is clear that I have a very melodic driven taste. But something has awakened my heavier side. e.g. For the first time this week Megadeth has really caught my ear and I've been driving through a lot of their material, not surprisingly its the more melodic releases that I'm really digging, albums like, Cryptic Warnings and Risk are the ones that I'm really liking, but the new Endgames release is pretty intriguing too. Hmmm... Is it possible to go outside the musical comfort zone at age 45?
I'll answer my own question... I've already begun that new journey, it will be interesting to see if it influences this list at some point.
Away we go...
TITLE: The Prisoner
ALBUM: The Number of the Beast
BAND: Iron Maiden
YEAR: 1982
I am number 2! hahahaha... One of my favorites off an album full of favorites!
TITLE: I'll Give You That
ALBUM: Back to the Mansion
BAND: April Wine
YEAR: 2001
For April Wine fans, a true hidden treasure, this is from a real fine studio album put out in 2001. Its a great set from a great Canadian band.
TITLE: Wishing Well
ALBUM: Heaven and Hell
BAND: Black Sabbath
YEAR: 1980
My favorite version of Sabbath, and my favorite track!
TITLE: Playing With Girls
ALBUM: Fly On The Wall
BAND: AC/DC
YEAR: 1985
Fly is a great release and this a real hard driving straight ahead rocker. As usual, great riffs galore!
TITLE: Burnin' Up
ALBUM: Hell Bent for Leather
BAND: Judas Priest
YEAR: 1979
I like to think of tracks like this as Side 2 Track 1. hahaha. Hell Bent for Leather was a great sign of the bands new direction (not as dark as prior releases), and is still one of their best releases top to bottom.
TITLE: 321
ALBUM: Humanity Hour 1
BAND: Scorpions
YEAR: 2007
I think all of us were hoping that Sting In the Tail would be Humanity Hour 2, but alas.. This is a great disc, and this a killer melodic track, at least one of my favorites.
TITLE: The Mirror
ALBUM: Awake
BAND: Dream Theater
YEAR: 1994
Awake is a very cool album, it's the album where the Dream Theater sound made a transition from melodic progressive to more dark and heavy progressive, as such this is a very cool hybrid of the two styles.
TITLE: Sweet Release
ALBUM: Birds of Prey
BAND: Live
YEAR: 2003
Wanted to contrast a track I listed last week with a more current track from this band. I love Birds of Prey, and Sweet Release is a perfect example of why.
TITLE: I Walk Alone
ALBUM: Carnival of Souls - The Final Sessions
BAND: KISS
YEAR: 1997
Cool track with Bruce Kulick on vocals, even contains a backward solo...
TITLE: Black Blade
ALBUM: Cultosaurus Erectus
BAND: Blue Oyster Cult
YEAR: 1980
One of my favorite album covers of all time. Black Blade has a cool vibe and cool timing changes.
