ROCKOLLECTIONS: REMEMBRANCES PT.2 END

In this second half of the show, the Remembrances turn to two legendary Rockers- Lou Reed and Phil Everly.
Reed was a member of the groundbreaking group Velvet Underground, who continued breaking ground as a solo artist and was a large part of the New York rock scene.
Phil Everly was one half of the most successful and influential Duos of all time in Rock & Roll.
And honestly, for all the years I listened to them, I couldn't tell them apart.
Phil was the younger one, but by only 2 years from brother Don.
And if you think the Everly Brothers time came and went in the 50's, well I am going to prove that wrong!
This will be fun!

RJ,
Holy crap, Two Yanks is 40 bucks for a cd and Born Yesterday is 65 dollars, and they are used?
Hell I'll send you the songs for half the price, lol!
Pick out a few and I'll give 'em free.
Now the question of who determines just how influential a band or artist is, for me it means how often I hear other bands say they were influenced in interviews, or I read articles or liner notes saying it.
My pet peeve is EXPERTS!
Who the hell makes someone an expert- does a secret board meet and bestow the title, or can any clown just DECLARE himself an expert, lol?
I see so many called that on TV and it really pisses me off.
If I were an actual expert on anything (and maybe I am), it would upset my modesty to be called that!
Back to Lou, lol!
Sweet Jane I played from a cult fave album, Rock Roll Animal- and it's not Lou playing lead but TWO guys,
Steve Hunter & Dick Wagner (had to read that small print!).
Besides that album, people like/dislike Berlin, and his best is probably Transformer.
With the Everly Brothers you like Bird Dog best out of those three, I'll take Till I Kissed You.
Lord Of The Manor gets the coveted Golden Pell, and correctly so, it was the best song I played in that half.
You're right, it is much more mature and dark- catch those lyrics about the woman upstairs with the honcho?
Wonder what they're doing, lol?
Thanks for the listen and writing,
Mike

Jon,
NO, I said Pell is playing the hits today, lol!
I don't think I have the expanded Rockpile album, there are no memory bells ringing there.
But I do know Dave Edmunds did THE Everly Brothers sound to perfection on his song Here Comes The Weekend- give a listen, LOVE that song!
I saw that, Bob Casale from Devo died.
Do you remember when I used to do the Tribute/Memorials for the entire year?
It would tie me up for weeks, and it was sorta depressing.
Certainly it took any creativity out of the show- a person died so I picked out a song they were on and played it, not exactly challenging.
Because I kept it small, just 3 people, I was able to play a great song like Lord Of The Manor- that was a different direction for the Everly Brothers, with some very adult lyrics in there.
Did you catch that story...the guy doing the upstairs maid?
I have the CD out, with that small print, and I am not so sure Lou Reed is the really good geetar player on that song.
I'll have an answer by the time I write RJ here, no disrespect to you, lol!
Hey man, I AM IN THE FLOW OF WRITING HERE AND I CAN'T JUST UP AND LEAVE TO LOOK AT A STUPID SMALL PRINT CD!!!
That was my imitation of you, LOL!
What's this...Mikey & Ikey?
I hate the names Mikey & Ikey!
Thanks for the listen and writing- the U.S.A. is about to play Canada for the Hockey Gold Medal, I will watch but they'll probably choke like the women did yesterday against the Canadians, that was horrid...up 2-0 with 3 1/2 minutes to go and LOSE!

Don't think I'll mess with the Everly's right now.  Two Yanks is 40 bucks for a cd and Born Yesterday is 65 dollars, those are both used.

I just read Jon's comment.  I guess Lou played the geetar on Sweet Jane.  What album was that on?

I have a question.  Who determines just how influential a band or artist is or if he/she/it is influential at all?  I ask of course based on the subject of the first two songs.  Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground.  They didn't influence me.  I'm sure there are others that weren't influenced by them.  That certainly doesn't make them non-influential.  I was just curious who decides that.

Back to Lou.  Walk On The Wild Side is the only song of his I can ever remember hearing and remotely liking. It's a pretty cool song.  That first track, Sweet Jane, wasn't bad either.  Especially the guitar work.  Who played guitar on that song?  I thought about giving it a Golden Pell.  With that being the case, it still doesn't scream influential to me.  Since you recommended three Everly Brothers albums, how 'bout just one Lou Reed album.

As far as the Everly Brothers go, can't say I didn't like any of these tracks.  The first three have that teeny  bopper feel to them.  I've heard them all, but I believe I like Bird Dog best out of those three.

Now, that fourth song, Lord Of The Manor, sounded much more mature.  Almost dark.  The vocals, as usual, were impeccable.  And the same goes for Crying In The Rain.  I think I've heard that one, so I'm going with Lord Of The Manor for the coveted Golden Pell.

Cool series Mike.

"Hell is playing the hits today"? Did you say that?

Do you have the expanded Rockpile album? There are four Everly Brothers songs on the CD and they sound really good.

You need to keep going on this, Bob Casale from Devo dies yesterday.

ALl the songs here were great, "Lord Of The Manor" was really good. I kinda see why it might have been played on WNEW, doesn't REALLY sound like the Everly Brothers? Maybe "heavier" than what was expected? Maybe I know nothing? Maybe I'm asking too many questions again?

Lou Reed was a really good geetar player. Don't think a lot of people know that. Maybe they do.

Nice show Mikey & Ikey!
