ROCKOLLECTIONS: THE KENTUCKY DERBY PT.2 END

mp_yderby2.jpg
As we conclude our musical Kentucky Derby, I know a horse I would bet on but he is for a very good reason not on the field, not a contender.
Then I’ll play a couple of songs that are not only about Horses, but RACEhorses!
After that, just for kicks let’s become children again, and go to a place beyond the Derby, where nobody bets on the ponies- into a world of dreams and magic for a ride on and with the Pony Man.
Then what’s that expression, “You can lead a horse to water, but…”?
Followed by a song that seems to bring out strong emotions in people, both for and against.
Finally, and all out of breath, I will leave you with a perfectly named song that was # 2 on the charts in 1968.
Let me know if I came in Win, Place or Show.
I ran my ass off, lol!
Good luck picking the winner at the Kentucky Derby.
May he or she go on to the Triple Crown!

I made it back for part 2 & I did hear "Horse With No Name". Good song, regardless what it's about! Was happy to hear "Wildfire" too, even if it is depressing. I really, liked the Gordon Lightfoot song! Not sure, if I've ever heard it or not. I also enjoyed, "Dark Horse" by George Harrison. I never heard it before, but it kept my attention. I think it would have been interesting to hear George Jones & "The Race Is On", right out of the gates. Nevertheless, it was a great show!!!

Think about it...there ain't no one for to give you no pain I said la...la...la...la...la.

If there ain't no one for to give you no pain, how can you not remember your name?

"In the desert you can remember your name..maybe that's why. The rider could only remember HIS name, the horse probably knew his OWN name but couldn't say what it was because he couldn't talk and the rider was a jerk from bringing him out to the desert so even if he could talk, he wouldn't waste the time telling the rider his name.

All camels are named either Hump or Humpy (depending on how many humps they have). It's true! Google it!

I agree, he should have a name- I'd give him a damn name!
But maybe they don't name camels either, lol!

Oogie...kinda like when you have a churgling stomach!

Oh I get it.

America gives you the runs.

Very appropriate for a Horse Race show, LOL!

that first one, that's what I'm here for!
I get it, if I say "horse songs" fast it means I am talking about those women our politicians hire, lol!
Yep, I had 2 George Harrison songs in there, and I agree, one clearly better than the other, but both worth a play.
I have noticed over the years that people feel strongly about that Wildfire- they either hate it or love it, not much in between.
It's always moved me, and I am a city guy- never had a pony named Wildfire or anything else, lol!
The Lightfoot song is called Pony Man, and like so much of his stuff, I always enjoy hearing and playing it.
The Golden Pell to the second George Harrison tune, Horse To Water, is the one I would have picked too.
As for the guitar work and all the musicianship, it is on that Jools Holland album, and is commonly considered the LAST thing George ever recorded.
In the previous comments I mentioned a meeting of the minds.
Before I did the show, I had a thought bubble about The Race Is On, and was going to play it by Dave Edmunds...but I also considered the George Jones original.
Alas, the bubble evaporated by the time I sat down to do the show, one of those casualties of free-form.
But damn, it would have sounded good right after that bugle, lol!
Maybe next time, and great thinking on your part.
Keep on anticipating what I'll play, it makes you more of a participant and I love that!
Thanks for listening and the keen thoughts, glad you liked what I did here,
Mike

Mike, you are right, I did like part 2.

I totally forgot about A Horse With No Name.  Great song by America.  And you have to quit saying "horse songs", cause it sounds like something else (think of the world's oldest profession).

Did I hear you right, 2 George Harrison songs?  The first one, Dark Horse, was okay, but that second one...more on that in a moment.

I have always liked Michael Martin Murphy's "horse song".  Wildfire really moved me when I was younger.  I literally dreamed about the story it told.  Plus, we had a pony that always made me think of that song, although her name was not Wildfire.

For the Golden Pell, it's downto two...the Gordon Lightfoot track (I missed the name), and the second George Harrison tune, Horse To Water.  What a great little bit of guitar work on that one.  So I'm giving it to George.  Both are outstanding songs.

And I'm surprised you didn't play "The Race Is On" by George Jones or Sawyer Brown...

Nice show.

Jon,
Hahahahaha...whenever you start with "Maybe it's me", I KNOW it is you!
What in hell is OOOGIE, LOL?
America makes you feel that way?
And in the other one, the horse died, the girl died, and that guy is gonna die.
And you will be OOOGIE!
Don't be sad, but I am happy you think folks will enjoy both halves of this one.
Leave me alone with The Osmonds and the Bad Horsie song...just sayin', LOL!
Thanks for the listen, thumbs up, and the always laughs,
Mike
