I still need to get around to buying that Bernie Marsden CD.

I have the albums from Ozzy Osbourne, Savatage, Armored Saint, Journey, Foreigner and AC/DC.

I'll be getting the Winger album.

A short report from the island of desolation this week. Yep, you heard it right, desolation it is as I'm swinging between the palm tree's like Tarzan fleeing from Mama Gunda, even though that is not my intention. It's hurricane season and Mother Nature does not give a fu*k about me trying to listen to some CDs, so I'm cutting the session short and using this downtime to think more about what'll I do to fill my bank account once I get back to the safety of those "concrete jungles" I'm familiar with.

I have to admit, I'm not very creative, since all I'm thinking of is opening a TV Antenna Installation/Service shop. Why? Well, ever since I was a kid one of my many chores was to go out and turn the antenna back to its best position when it moved. The best position, in this case, would have been where we could watch both state channels with minimal grain in their picture and at a noise level where we could understand every tenth word coming from the tube. It had a sweet spot to it and not only we preferred it that way, but I was told I'm the only one who knew how to find it, even though I was just swinging the damn thing blind while my Father was yelling out "turn it right, turn it left". So why did I have to put it back into that one precise spot? Because it was a storm ripping through our town with wind guts of about 150km/hour, that's why. But you are correct. Why me? Why not my sister? I could never figure that out. You think they liked her more? No, I think I was their favorite... the chosen one. Anyway, by the time I got back from outside, the antenna already moved so I had to repeat the same thing, all over again. Well, guess who's laughing now? I can use this experience to build my own business. I even thought of the name: "Lightning Strikes Antenna Installation and Service". I know what you're thinking: "Who TF still uses antennas?" Well, you might be right there but I'm not a one-trick pony either.

I'm going to sell/install/service satellite dishes too. Boom!
For that, I even came up with a new name: "Lightning Strikes... Twice! Antenna/Satellite Dish Service and Installation/Retail Store". And all I need is a partner. As much as it pains me, I'll need one of those to succeed in this venture. I'm afraid of heights so I'll be the safety net down while my partner installs those things on the roof, side of the building, poles, or whatever. If you can think of a place, he'll do it. What? You think I have money to spend on Life Nets and Lineman belts? No, I'm not gonna do that. Fu*k that! I'll wait for him to fall down, then I'll catch him... after he bounces off the ground once or twice, of course, I don't want to hurt myself. Then I'll have to deduct my injuries from his paycheck. He probably won't like that. As for being safe up there, well he can hold on to the antenna, can he? Yeah, in storms too. I had to do it, why couldn't he? But thanks for looking out for me, I'll be fine. I'll have him sign a disclaimer. Oh man, I'm gonna be so rich it's not even funny. What? What do you mean by who TF uses satellite dishes these days? Two words. Third-World-Countries. I heard it's the latest craze over there. They might not have shirts, socks, sandals, or even a signal for that matter... but they do have to keep up with the Joneses. And I'm here to help 'em... and myself, of course. Well, more myself than them but who cares? OK, I'm only helping myself, but they will rip the benefits in the long run. I think I have about 10 years to milk this camel, before it runs dry, so to speak.

Listening to great music on a deserted island, uninterrupted, is like a day in paradise. Taking breaks only to think about work (and not necessarily act on those impulses) might be the exact order God intended us to live out our peaceful lives in harmony, yet, granting us free will we chose the opposite of everything that makes sense. Spitting in the wind is what we do. How's that working out for us? No wonder God is giving us the "silent" treatment.

Not me.
I know when to hold 'em when to fold 'em, when to walk away, and how to swim. Speaking of which, there is a skill I have, yet, time and time again I chose not to pursue it further. Baker. My Grandpa was one. Damn good too. Learned the secrets of the trade from his distant uncle in a 4 years live-in apprenticeship. That's how they did it back then. At the end of his studies, he got paid a few pennies and went back to his parents who put their piss-poor wealth together and bought him a piece of swamp. My Papi built an empire on that property and made a name for himself, despite all the hardships he had to endure. The business was growing. So much so that before WWII he managed to save up money for new equipment. Then the War To End All Wars Part II came along where first the Communists won, then they converted the whole private sector into government-controlled institutions, only allowing my Papi to sell bread that was made in "their" factories. You can say, "they" shuttered his dreams, "they" took his dignity, but "they" could not rob him of his good name. Everybody knew and adored him, long after he was just a puppet in his own store. The animosity our family felt toward the new regime is summed up right there. I could have been a famous baker mogul. Instead, I'll remain to be known as "Herr. Albert's grandson" because people 3 decades later still remembered Papi. Sure, his bread, especially the homemade croissant was talked about far and wide in our region but it was his big heart that earned him his reputation. At the end of each business day, he would divide all the remaining bread among poor people lined up in front of his store, free of charge. Rumor has it, he saved a whole bunch of Romas from retreating German soldiers who were executing second-rate citizens left and right at the end of the war. No, you won't read about this on any Wikipedia page (nor hear about it on a Sabbaton song), but I witnessed myself the Wajda (“leader of gypsies”) stepping out of his White Mercedes to shake my Papi's hands with utmost gratitude, every time his chauffeur drove by our house.

What does all this have to do with me and the bakery, you might ask?
Not much, because I know I'm not cut out for this line of work, even though I'm not clueless when it comes to making dough, literally. I still have to figure out how to do that figuratively, though. My Papi thought me everything I needed to know about croissants. Not that sissy layered, flaky, French pastry that looks like granny's wrinkled a** the next day, but the real buttery dough that melts in your mouth with every bite. I also worked in my cousin's Pizzeria, where I added additional tricks to my sleeve. I don't bake Pizza very often, but when I do, the word travels around fast. Once, I got invited to be a cook on a movie set. I rejected. Have been asked to become a partner in a Pizza restaurant. I declined that too. Yet, when I needed a job, a night shift at a bakery, with a bunch of female workers, seemed like a challenge I was up to. Spoiler alert: Went down in history as a one-night stand. In retrospect, I must've lost my marbles. Hence the origin of the marble bread. What!?

Let's reenact the night I would never forget.
At the beginning of the shift, the "girls" were all singing. So far so good, I was quick to convince my naive self. An hour later, they were swearing, spitting, and throwing dough at each other. A dramatic change that quickly escalated into fistfights, scratching, screaming, kicking, and pulling hair. An awkward silence followed all that jazz, which shortly after turned into laughter and singing again. The same cycle repeated itself without warning in numerous successions. When we came to the silent part for the umpteenth time I started singing solo, eager to lead us all into the advanced state of merriness when suddenly and inexplicably, I become the sole reason for everything that was wrong in this world. I don't know, perhaps my judgment might have been clouded by the night, but by the time my shift ended, it was clear as day that women, dough, sanity, and singing do not mix well together.
In fact, I'd wager it's a sure recipe for disaster.
